Yowamushi Pedal Limit Break – 08

Not a good day for sports in anime, I’m afraid.  Since sports is the main course with this series, that’s a problem.  Fortunately it wasn’t as much a washout as this week’s Spy x Family, but this was a pretty weak episode by Yowapeda standards.  I hate to beat a dead bicycle tire, but the problem really is Teshima.  It’s not a coincidence that it was when the third-years (hey, at least we saw them for the first time in a while) graduated and TeshimAoyagi moved into co-lead status that Yowamushi Pedal dipped a couple of notches in quality.  And dammit, he just won’t go away.

All this is subjective of course, but it’s hard for me to grok Watanabe-sensei’s decision to give these two mediocre characters such a big role for such a long time.  They’re boring, their bromance is boring, and their riding is boring.  I know they’re supposed to embody some kind of heroic everyman story but honestly, it just doesn’t work.  Onoda pretty much cornered the market on that as a five foot-nothing, 100-pound novice with no racing experience and zero self-confidence.  We didn’t need pale imitations gobbling up so much valuable screen time.

Honestly, what I kept thinking all through the episode was that what it needed desperately was a shot of Midousuji-kun.  He can be a bit much to be sure, but his weirdness would have been a breath of fresh air blowing away the stale so-called showdown between Teshima and Ashikiba.  He himself isn’t the most exciting character, but the larger issue is there’s no emotional traction to Ashikiba and Teshima’s so-called rivalry.  And as for Teshima’s “plan” to sacrifice Onoda as a ploy to try and lure Manami out to soon, let’s just say that was right up there with Teshima’s usual tactical standard.

I know we have two cours here, but I truly worry for Limit Break.  This Teshima focus needs to stop and it just keeps dragging on and on.  Surely it won’t go for the ultimate anticlimax of these two being the final showdown (I hope) – presumably they’ll battle till the mountain checkpoint and give way then.  But FFS, how long will that take?  As the old saying goes, “dance with who brung ya”.  Yowapeda has too often lost focus on the characters that made it what it is, Onoda, Naruko, and Imaizumi – and Manami among the HakoGaku lot.  That’s a self-inflicted wound, but there’s still time to turn things around (though less with every passing week).

It’s absolutely insane how boring this season is.. i was insanely hyped when i watched the previous one but it really sucks… Honoda is a terrible protagonist, to be more specific being the talented passive newbie is terrible for being a good senpai which would be the natural progression for an high school sport anime.
Teshima is a good character, i like Teshima but you can’t really focus half the season on a supporting character that did nothing the previous 4 seasons.

I’ve got to say I’ve enjoyed the season and I’ve liked that Watanabe-sensei has taken a risk and made minor characters from the previous race into major ones for this race. I understand why many don’t like Teshima but I do think he is distinct as an everyman and very distinct from Onoda. Onoda I don’t think is representative of many people as most don’t have the innate talent to pick up a sport and be the best in their age group within a year.

I think more can relate to working really hard at a sport for a number of years and be very good but clearly below the upper echelon. Having said that I do agree that the three major characters are the most interesting and the show is best when focused on them. However, to maintain focus on them throughout the whole series is not a great strategy for longevity in my opinion.

As always love your work and right up – you’ve introduced me to some of my absolute favourite shows including Yowamushi but notably Baby Steps.

  3. Thanks, appreciate that. It’s a balance. He does need to highlight the others but at this point the main three hve been bit players for basically two full seasons. To me, that’s off.

As for Teshima, I realize not everyone shares my opinion. I just find him utterly boring, unfortunately.

Out of curiosity Enzo, do you know of many modern day Sports Anime that actually go through all three years of high school or middle school? A lot of the ones seem to focus on one year but don’t do much work on the follow up years? I’m pretty sure Touch, Cross Game, and I’m assuming EyeShield but they are all a bit older. Would be great to get a good recommendation.

That’s a good point – we haven’t had much at all on any of the main three for quite a while – and tbh not sure if we’ve had any character focus or development on Imaizumi in particular this whole race. I’m guessing the last half will be very Onoda focused but I’m sure Naruko and Imaizuimi will have their Midosuji battle at some stage.

Complete side note – have you been watching Crazy Human University? Not nearly as morbid as I expected and much much better than I thought it would be.

  5. Well, Mix is an obvious option. Adachi will go all three years if he actually finishes it. Off the top of my head I’m not remembering any others from the past five years or so but I could be forgetting. Maybe Ao Ashi will get there, and Baby Steps pretty much did.

I dropped that one after the premiere and never looked back. I’ll take your word for its merit, LOL.
