Memo to Sidonia – you may be taking this whole “moeblob” thing a bit too literally… Sidonia no Kishi is nothing if not consistent. When it does characters, it’s clumsy and stiff in every way. When it turns to sweeping plots, action scenes and hard sci-fi intellectual navel-gazing (no other […] Read more
The pedigree of this series is showing through in subtle ways. To be honest, this episode is more in-line with what I was expecting from Arslan Senki. I know the story Tanaka and Arakawa are telling here, but it nevertheless surprised me just how densely packed the first three episodes […] Read more
Warning: incoming raves. Sorry to say (well, not all that sorry) this is one of those Baby Stepisodes that just make me want to gush. When the series is this good (and it’s this good more and more as the manga goes on) it brings out the fanboy in me, […] Read more
Kekkai Sensen is so cool it’s illegal in 67 countries and two protectorates. I’m running out of superlatives for the stylistic accomplishments of Blood Blockade Battlefront. I guess it’s not shocking that a pastiche of BONES, Gainax, Nightow, Baccano! and Matsumoto Rie would be off the charts, but it could […] Read more
Owari no Seraph is one of the more frustrating shows of the season. Here’s another series that’s pushing up against the make-or-break point as far as blogging is concerned. At this point I’m inclined to say probably no, though there are individual elements here I really like a lot. Seraph […] Read more
Fittingly enough, Shokugeki no Souma is really all about taking the bitter with the sweet. I suppose I’m close to the point here of needing to make a decision about Food Wars, and it’s not an easy one. For just about every thing I like about the series there’s something […] Read more
I submit the following for your consideration… On the left is Ogijima, the small island off the coast of Takamatsu in Kagawa that I visited today. On the right is… Well, you know what’s on the right. Of course, in point of fact I think the place should be called […] Read more
It’s not easy to do what Punchline is doing, believe me. I’m not sure just what the fuck this is, but it’s either incredibly brilliant or incredibly stupid. Of course there’s no good reason why it can’t be both, and I’m beginning to think that’s exactly what it is. There’s […] Read more
Give yourselves a pat on the back. No huge surprises in the Spring 2015 poll – Fate always figured to come out on top (though Ore Monogatari!! gave it a good fight) and it’s obviously a disappointment that 4th-place Digimon Adventures Tri has been delayed at least until Summer (the […] Read more
That was a great series but damn, did it fly by – felt like it only lasted three weeks. For the record, I like all the characters in Ore Monogatari!!. Yamato is a bit of a cipher so far, but certainly likeable and entertaining, and Takeo is a thoroughly winning […] Read more
