Marriagetoxin definitely qualifies as one of those shows I’d like to like more than I do. It’s unusual, it’s Bones, it has what on paper is a pretty interesting premise. All signs should be pointing to yes but it’s just not clicking for me. Four episodes is a pretty good trial run, so at this point I’m inclined to say I won’t be covering it from here. But I’m interested enough to watch at least one more episode so as always. I reserve the right to change my mind.

This arc turns its attention to the bodyguarding gig that was teased at the end of Episode 3. The subject is a comically shy girl named Shiori, whose uncle – he has custody after her father died and named her as his successor at the family corporation – has heard his older sister has hired an assassin to eliminate her as competition. The uncle is as crazy as everyone else in this series seems to be, by the way.

We get a succession of moderately amusing college-related events here – a nomikai and a camping trip primarily. Gero posing as a third-year college student is certainly less of a stretch than Juuzou from Kill Ao going back to middle school – though he did have the benefit of an age reversion. Gero likewise enjoys being a student instead of an assassin. I always enjoy college life as a canvas for anime – it’s one we don’t see nearly often enough. But there’s still a lot here that just isn’t working for me.

You can include the villain Naruko in that. He’s not especially interesting or ominous – he’s too silly to be, really. It seems as if the trend is for Hikaru to face off against another master in every arc, at least so far. I like weird and random stuff, but one does like to feel as if things are happening for a reason and I just don’t get that here. It’s just a bunch of weird characters doing weird stuff with a basic plot connecting them. We’ll see if next week has anything on tap that might move the needle, but I’ll be keeping my expectations modest.
