There’s a fundamental problem with Tokyo Revengers. Well, there’s several – but we haven’t got all day. What I’m thinking of here is the fact that it very rarely gets the big moments right. It seems to be at its best in the intertidal zone, when it steps back and slows down between major events. But it’s like when those major events arrive, the series can’t hide from how silly it is at its core. I mean, how could anyone watch Takemitchy as a punching bag at this point and not find it comic? Especially with his locker room speeches uninterrupted.
I actually think TMR has been on a decent run this season – I’ve mostly enjoyed it, at least. But seriously, this was just a big whiff for me. First of all, comic or not I’m royally sick of watching Takemitchy get the crap beaten out of him. And guys (in this case, Mitsuya) don’t get whacked on the head with a metal pipe swung at full force by a healthy teenaged male and pop up and say “I’m fine”. And what’s the plan here, really? Just keep wading in and letting Taiju beat the crap out of you? On that at least Mitsuya and Takemitchy seem to agree.
I also wonder – how is it that Taiju got stabbed and now he doesn’t seem to be even bleeding, much less suffering any ill effects? Bug muscles or no, that knife went in at least a couple of inches, and now the dude is throwing punches and church pews too for good measure. Not that the wound had time to close up, but even if it had he would have reopened it. But it’s as if that knife attack never happened – he’s just fine. Even allowing for the usual suspension of disbelief, a person has limits.
I don’t know whether to take this supposed new plan of Takemitchy’s – “I’m going to defeat you and take over Black Dragon” – remotely seriously. I don’t know if he does, or this is just another stalling technique. But at this point almost anything would be preferable to Takemitchy grinding the action to a halt and making another speech (during which the bad guys always stop and courteously wait for him to finish). Maybe he has managed to change the timeline, but I’m not exactly certain it’s materially changed things for the better.
