Isekai Ojisan – 10

Isekai Ojisan just keeps plugging along in its unassuming fashion, never changing much but usually delivering.  The formula is extremely simple, really, which means it has to be a good one.  And well-executed.  There’s not a lot of safety net here – there’s nothing to fall back on if the essentials don’t work.  Fortunately they do for me, most of the time anyway.  The premise is clever and the execution sharp, and I laugh pretty much every week.  For this sort of show I can’t ask for a lot more than that.

Both major skits clicked pretty well for me this week.  We meet (at least I think so, I don’t remember her) Fujimiya’s friend Sawae, who’s convinced herself that Fujimiya has fallen into the hands of a cult.  An appearance by Fujimiya’s brother (puberty really did hit him like a ton of bricks) doesn’t help – though eventually Fujimiya is able to convince Sawae she’s gotten the wrong end of the stick.  Sawae then turns to matchmaking Fujimiya and Takafumi  – or perhaps it would be better to say she’s testing Takafumi’s suitability.  Another memory wipe disaster is narrowly averted after Ojisan gets a little casual about showing off Icarus Elran.

Of somewhat more substance but also very amusing is the next chapter, which finds Ojisan recounting his visit to an onsen with Elf-san.  This is Elf at her tsundere best, but there’s some important stuff going on here.  The inn has a sign in Japanese, and Elf claims it was founded by another transported Japanase, Murayama Shojiro, 20 years earlier (when he was 88, meaning he’s now likely dead.  He somewhat ominously named the in the “Waters of Purgatory”.  The current innkeeper actually delivers a highly informative rundown of all this, but Uncle is too busy doing an inventory sort to pay much attention.

That whole bit with Elf and the shared room (these two already have a history) was really cleverly staged.  I haven’t yet figured out what the percentage of actual Chad is with Ojisan, but the way he acts in these sorts of situations can’t be totally innocent.  I personally think he knows more than he’s letting on but maybe I’m judging him by the standers of a different sort of series than this one…

    He is innocent.
This is my only criticism of this series, the way how sometimes Ojisan acts “out of character” just to fill some “mandatory fanservice quota”.

  2. Is that merely an opinion or insider knowledge (and thus, a spoiler)?

  3. Opinion, but should be obvious.
His behavior changes completely, he “literally” goes “out of character” and it’s just to “offer” these moments of “fanservice” with the female characters.

He’s not out of character. He simply is just like that – he would not consciously lead people/girls on and then disappoint them. He just has a knack for acting and talking in ways that cause extreme misunderstandings.

Episode 11’s up. The irregular schedule of subbing thanks to Netflix is a real pain to track.
