Anime From the Vault Episode 5: Ghost Hound

Once more we unlock anime’s vault to end all vaults, 2007.  This time around it’s Production I.G.’s 20th Anniversary project, Ghost Hound.  Psychological thrillers just don’t get much better – smart, disturbing, emotionally powerful, with great visuals and possibly the best sound design in anime.  A glorious show from a glorious time in anime.

I really liked this show first time round, and was delighted when I re-watched it a few years ago that it still held up. The sound design of the show was absolutely awesome and really the only criticism I had was the ‘Casper’ forms of their first OOB experiences which looked a bit silly, especially after the sheer spookiness of the derelict hospital scenes.

Great show though, nice to see it’s still remembered well!

  2. I must admit, I thought the discordant nature of those images with the rest of the story was quite intentional – and injected a much-needed element of whimsy.

Not gonna lie, my brain confused Ghost Hound with Ghost Stories and I almost did a spit take going ‘what the hell is Enzo on’ lol

If you’ve never heard the Ghost Stories dub before, it is the purest form of official shitposting I’ve ever seen in anime and it’s hilarious.

But as for Ghost Hound, I actually hadn’t heard of it before so onto the ‘to watch’ list it goes

  4. Mission accomplished!
