I should probably say at this point, I’ve never been a big fan of survival game series. Bokurano wasn’t bad, but I’m hard-pressed to think of too many others I made it to the end of. To me they mostly seem like contrived ridiculous situations and people acting incredibly dumb, for drama’s sake. As such I’m not the best person to opine on Psyren – it may be quite an outstanding example of the genre, and it’s the genre itself that isn’t working for me.
As you can guess from that intro, this isn’t working for me, really. I can objectively comment on the production itself – it’s palpably cheap, but more or less competently done. If I were hooked into the story it would be perfectly adequate, but it’s not going to patch over anything if I’m not. Ageha is fine as a protagonist, and the situation is fine as these things go. I just struggle with my suspension of disbelief where this sort of story is concerned.
Beyond that, I don’t have that much. A bunch of boneheads (the idiot stick always gets a workout in these things) walk straight into their deaths by not listening to Ageha’s warning. He stays behind because she’s out cold with a raging fever, but when she wakes up and tells him they’re goners, he declares that he’ll go after them rather than head straight to the “gate” (conveniently displayed on the broken pay phone in the wrecked building where they’re hiding out). The one survivor when he arrives is a red-haired salaryman-type who’s hardly affable, but not as aggressively stupid as the others.
I don’t know what the whole “Agro” thing means or who’s behind all this, and I might be curious enough to stick around for a bit. But at this point Psyren doesn’t seem like something I’d cover, though as always I reserve the right to change my mind. It’s entertaining enough for what it is, just not the sort of series I’m generally compatible with.
