First, I’m really glad to hear of all your plans for the podcast. I can well imagine the amount of effort it takes to produce something that sounds as smooth and polished as these do–it’s very impressive, all the kudos to you guys!! (and sorry I’m not commenting on youtube, but it’s easier for me here for various reasons).

Second, I really enjoyed your discussion of fanservice–it gave me a lot to think about. I’m approaching it from the perspective of someone who is female. I think fanservice often starts at the level of character design–women with ridiculously apportioned anatomy, very pretty guys and very fit guys, etc. But when it comes to things like the accidental boob touching, etc. I agree that I think these moments could usually be cut without any detrimental effect on the plot. I can’t say I like them, but they’re generally a minor irritation. However, there are times where they cross the line for me. The one that immediately sprang to mind was the Seven Deadly Sins. I dropped that show partially because I didn’t like where the plot was headed, but also because Meliodas’s treatment of Elizabeth just came across as too much like sexual harassment to me to a point where I was disturbed by it and didn’t want to watch it anymore.

I will close with a question related to the anime news segment on Sony acquiring Crunchyroll. How does it currently get determined which anime get simulcast on Crunchyroll and which go on Funimation? Are there bidding wars for various titles? Do production companies have deals/contracts with one site or the other?

  2. Thank you for those very kind words. That’s a great question and we will address it on this weekend’s recording for sure.

As far as Nanatsu, I dropped it myself but mostly because it began to bore me pretty quickly. Just curious – did you watch Fairy Tail and if so, what did you think of the fanservice there?

I want to second the statement that fanservice often starts with character design. Sometimes it’s enough to look at the poster of an upcoming show to form your expectations. That’s why it’s kinda strange to me when people start watching a show with obviously sexy designed characters and then in the middle they complain about too much fanservice. On the other hand, I understand that characters’ behavior and a script can change to the point when it becomes unacceptable (like Riv mentioned).
Personally, I can’t remember a series I dropped because of fanservice. I see it more as an organic element of anime culture and it rarely comes as a surprise for me, considering design, genre, etc. Moreover, it might be done attractively. But maybe my watched list isn’t just that big enough to have an objective opinion on this theme.
Also, it was nice to hear about your plans regarding Notaku. Sounds interesting, though demanding.

I have not watched Fairy Tale. I tried one or two episodes, but it didn’t grab me enough to commit to a series that long. The big difference in Nanatsu to me was that often those moments are staged as accidental, with both parties embarrassed, but in that series Meliodas knew exactly what he was doing and kept doing it, despite Elizabeth’s obvious discomfort.

The favorite part of the podcast in the survey was a hard question for me, the top 4 results were pretty much neck in neck, if I remember right I choose ‘topic of the week’ since it was given more time and discussions are more in-depth as it should be. For the Oricon Rankings, I must say I’m kinda indifferent to it, it’s fine since I can learn obscure but actually popular series but I also won’t probably mind if it was removed in the main podcast.

Glad to hear mentions of The Sopranos in the podcast, it’s a favorite of mine, how do you compare it to other tv shows regardless of genre? Also, why does Setsuken keep calling LiA as lost in America, is it a form of endearment?

Anyways, whatever changes or addons the production committee decides for the podcast, I’ll gladly support it. Thanks for a great podcast as always!

  6. Thanks much! Lost in America is actually the official name of the website, from way back. Because of the URL it’s sort of gradually morphed to Lost in Anime over the years.

Assuming this name is from before you moved to Japan?

Crazy… Every time I write a long comment, something weird happens. Ho well… Just so you know I wrote another longass comment and it’s disappeared. I probably won’t be commenting anymore, but love the show!

  9. Sorry! It’s just the standard WP comment module – I don’t know why this is happening to you. Of course you can comment on YT as well.

It is weird… This time I copied it before submitting so I could try again with Firefox, Safari, and Chrome. Still didn’t work. Maybe I got flagged by some spam plugin for some reason? Ho well…

  11. I do have a spam folder and legit stuff ends up there occasionally, but nothing from you. I honestly have no idea.
