First Impressions – Darwin’s Game

Full disclosure – I didn’t even make it through the premiere of Darwin’s Game.  I’ll confess I’m not nuts for the death game genre to begin with – in point of fact the only one that really works is Mirai Nikki, and that’s because it’s actually a very clever Evangelion satire (it’s true and I’ll fight anyone who disagrees).  That said, I’m always prepared to give new entries a shot to prove me wrong.  Maybe someday one of them will.

Darwin’s Game ain’t the one.  This is bog standard stuff, to the point where if you’re familiar with the genre nothing that happens here will likely surprise you.  None of the characters stand out as likeable, interesting, or unusual, and the visuals are likewise pretty generic.  It’s a depressing exercise altogether and one I wasn’t prepared to waste 22 minutes of my life on.

How is Mirai Nikki an Evangelion satire? I’m sure you’re right cause you usually are but I just don’t see it.

  2. Too complicated to answer here. Discussed it in many of my episode posts – there are bits and pieces of it scattered throughout the series.

Alright, I’ll look through them instead, thanks. Keep up the great work.

  4. Sorry, just no time and a short answer really can’t get to the heart of it. Yuki’s arc generally, the ending, the relationship of the supporting cast (especially Akise) to Yuki. It goes on and on.
