Otoyomegatari – 84

It’s a pretty low-key entry for Otoyomegatari this time, after the last two very eventful chapters (especially #82).  On the other hand we do get some lovely shots of Victorian London, which is quite a trip down memory lane for obvious reasons.  It’s enough to make me hope I’m wrong about Mori-sensei ending the series upon Henry Smith sailing back home (though I don’t think I am).

In fact, the only recurring character in this chapter is Mr. Hawkins, Henry’s older friend in Istanbul.  And he’s rather cross at not having received any promised letters from Henry of late.  This prompts Hawkins to pen a missive to Smith’s family back home, in which he’s quite apologetic about not getting Mr. Smith to agree to return to his family at once.  Niklovski is Hawkins’ security blanket and he reassures Henry’s parents that their son is in good hands, but it’s clear that Mr. Hawkins is still plenty worried about Henry himself.

As for London, it is nice to finally get a look (or perhaps we have already, and I’ve forgotten) at Mr. Smith’s family.  The father is in parliament apparently, and Henry’s brother is none too keen to see his reaction to Hawkins’ letter.  There’s also a niece and nephew, Elliot, who’s a dead ringer for his uncle and is thoroughly enchanted at the idea of the adventures he must be having (even if his sister finds their uncle “a bit peculiar”).  All the best of men are, dear girl…

So, Enzo… could we say you are very peculiar? 😛

On a more bittersweet note, now the wait for an anon saviour to tide us over between the published volumes and keep the manga virtual visibility alive begins…

I don’t know if you’re interested in blogging about some new manga, but the creator of Mushishi started a new series some time ago. It is (unsurprisingly) good. There comes out one chapter every other month, so it could be manageable for your schedule.
