I always did hate math class. The plot is definitely thickening with Kiseijuu, which is staking out a place as the all-arounder anime of the season. There are other shows that have reached higher highs and may do individual elements better, but Parasyte is the whole package – I don’t […] Read more
There are things about what we’re seeing in Akatsuki no Yona that just don’t add up. And I love that. One way to spot a good anime, I think, is when it’s able to accomplish a whole lot without all that much seemingly happening. A series doesn’t have to be […] Read more
“Flatline” Jamie Mathieson has proved himself the most interesting writer of the Capaldi era so far – though there have only been four of them. Only in Mathieson’s hands has Clara’a Mary Sue-ism seemed present to serve a larger purpose – though to be fair that purpose was surely laid […] Read more
Why settle for an imitation Sawashiro when you can have the real thing? Shingeki no Bahamut is another show I’m not quite ready to commit to after three episodes. It’s definitely interesting to look at, and has a certain measure of wit and creativity in the writing. But I’m not […] Read more
There’s a little refresher course on what sets Yowapeda apart from the pack of sports anime. I’ve been sort of rooting for Midousuji since this race for the second-day finish line began, but this episode really made it a lot easier to do so. Midsousuji has a lot of flaws […] Read more
Three episodes isn’t always enough… Gugure! Kokkuri-san – 03 Gugure! Kokkuri-san is going to be a tough series to decide on, blogging-wise. I definitely like it, but my concern from the beginning was whether the humor here would be a little one-note and hard to sustain over a full cour. […] Read more
It was a quiet week in New Fuyuki, not my home town… Yes I did watch it, and no – I’m still undecided on whether I’m going to cover it. But it’s clear that a lot of people are interested in this show, so it only seems logical to touch […] Read more
So long Phanfone, hello Vongfong… In many ways, this batch of photos is a chronicle of the week between typhoons. It starts out in Kyoto in the gloriously clear, dry weather following Phanfone’s departure, and finishes in Shimoda on the Izu Peninsula as Vongfong roars in from the South. But […] Read more
I thought I’d post a quick note to thank LiA readers for pushing the site past the 6 million visitor milestone this week, and far sooner than I ever thought possible. Here’s to six million more, and even faster too – thank you! Read more
This is an episode that just screams “October”. The Koushien itself (and this final play-in game) may be in August, but playoff baseball is everywhere at the moment. The World Series is just about to begin, and the Hanshin Tigers have just beaten the Empire Yomiuri Giants (Yomiuri and the […] Read more
