Required Reading – Top 10 Manga Wrap-up

That’s a wrap on the Top 10 Manga project – once again, my sincere thanks to the patrons who made it possible.  It was a very fun and very difficult list to compile.  A few notes on the list:

Series by Century:

  • 20th – 5
  • 21st – 5

Series by Demographic:

  • Seinen – 5
  • Shounen – 4
  • Shoujo – 1

I can’t say I’m surprised to see seinen on top, though to be honest I might have guessed it would monopolize even more of the list.  40% is a pretty strong showing for shounen, though the line between those two demographics can get pretty blurry at times.  There are four ongoing series on the list if you include Hunter X Hunter and Vagabond, though it’s a bit of a leap of faith to do so (especially with the latter).  Fully half the list premiered in two years – 1994 and 1998, which I guess tells us that was a very strong era for manga.

What series  (apart from BokuYaba, obviously) just missed?  I didn’t and won’t rank these – either a series made the list or not.  But some that were under consideration for a good while include Pluto, Oyasumi Punpun, Hourou, Musuko, Yugami-ku ni wa Tomodachi ga Inai, and Hikaru no Go.  If I’d done a top 20 they’d certainly be on it.

Lastly, the contest!  Samu actually came the closest with 8/10 correct, but he won last time and frankly, it’s kind of insider training there.  So I’m awarding the prize to the runner-up.  Monymous and Alonom both got 7/10 correct, but Monymous was closer on the placements, so congrats to Monymous – you’re the winner.  The prize, as with the 2000’s list, is a haiku about any series of your choosing from this list.  Please let me know in the comments what you’d like me to go with.

Thanks for tuning in.  If you have suggestions for what I should tackle with the next crowdsourcing project, please let me know in the comments, or drop me a line on twitter.  Stay frosty!

Thanks for the list, Enzo. I first read Spirit Circle due to your prior mentions of it, and it’s still one of my all-time favorites.

I’ll pick Hunter x Hunter for the haiku.

  2. That won’t be my first! I’ll start thinking about it.

I could never get through the anime, but for my money the Aku no Hana manga was one of the best reads.

  4. Yeah, agree to disagree on that one ROFL.
