LiA Bespoke Project: Best of the 2000’s in Anime – Project Engage!

Thanks to everyone who supported the crowdfunding project for the “Best of the 2000’s in Anime”!  Thanks to your generosity we achieved Tier 4, meaning the list will be a Top 10 with write-ups for each series.  As I noted in the Ko-fi post, I will make the selections available exclusively to those who supported the project (and hey, feel free to do so now on Ko-fi if you want in) for one week in countdown form.  After that, I will do the same on the main site.

As far as timing  goes, I’ve just started the process of winnowing – needless to say it’s brutal.  Also needless to say, this is a nutso season.  Nevertheless I will try to get things kicked off sooner rather than later, as the season isn’t going to get any less crazy (just the opposite).  A few stray thought to consider:

  • The eligibility will be basically the same as the 2010’s list.  That is, anything still airing in Winter 2000 through anything that finished by Fall 2009.
  • That said, because I wasn’t blogging anime back then (or anything else), I’m loosening things a bit to include individual seasons of series I feel deserved inclusion, even if the total package might not have made the cut (or if it had sequels which aired in 2010 or later).
  • Just to get it out there: I did not watch as much seasonal anime in the noughties (especially in the first half) as I have in the decades since.  There are omissions here – shows I’m sure are great that I haven’t seen.  If a series you think is a masterpiece isn’t in there, it might be that I don’t feel the same, or it could be that I just haven’t found time to watch it.  Feel free to excoriate me in the comments but it is what it is.
  • It’s really striking (though I knew it to be true) how many multi-season anime there were then compared to now.  And how rich the OVA/ONA market was.
  • Speaking of which, this would have been an impossible list to compile without including OVAs – they were too important at the time.  But I made a conscious decision to exclude theatrical films, because then as now I don’t think it’s fair to compare them against TV anime.  Maybe at some point that can be a separate project.

Once more, my sincere thanks to everyone who follows the site – especially those of you that made this project a reality.  I’ll be certain to include a roll of honor in the credits once I start the actual countdown.

Congrats on getting this to Tier 4 and I’m looking forward to reading this post. Anime still had limited accessibility and at least during the early years. It took a few years into the new millennium for DVDs to finally surpass VHS tapes in sales and rentals. Thus, we no longer had to “keep circulating the tapes” or to “be kind, rewind”. This was a big deal for me as DVDs opened a new avenue for viewing; the computer. I get why computers no longer come with optical drives, but I still miss them. It sounds like this will be a lot of work and I can’t wait to see your choices.
