Koori Zokusei Danshi to Cool na Douryou Joshi – 03

Those in search of irony or edginess can probably keep shopping.  Shows can certainly evolve and change after three episodes, but I get the feeling that Koori Zokusei Danshi to Cool na Douryou Joshi probably isn’t going to be one of them.  Not much, anyway.  The humor is very clever and that can have a bit of cut to it at times, but I never feel any real sense of drama here.  I don’t think anybody is a closet A-hole and I expect most problems to pretty much work out.  You have to like watching these characters just be, because that’s mostly what you’re going to get.  For me it’s so far, so good…

Take for example the assignments – did anyone really believe Fuysutsuki and Himuro to get assigned to different departments?  Not only did they not, they got seated right next to each other, and Komori and Saejima are there too.  That could certainly happen (especially when your company president is the Buddha) – companies sometimes like to keep trainees together if they have a good comfort level together.  But it’s more about the nature of the beast where Koori Zokusei is concerned.

We’re definitely leading the season in blushing reaction shots, that’s for sure.  Those are adorable, though I can’t rule out eventually getting tired of them (we’ll see).  I continue to enjoy the cheeky humor – like Komori-san going over all foxy over fried tofu, or Fuyutsuki’s “Konbanya” text to Himuro-kun.  Even a little serration with the comedy has a positive effect, as it provides a touch of contrast with the unrelentingly cozy main couple.  The “drama” there this week mostly surrounds Himuro deciding to ask Fuyutsuki out on a “thank you” dinner, and trying to work up the nerve.

Maybe there was a bit of foreshadowing something darker when Fuyutsuki gazed at her photo of Okinawa and noted that she’d never been that close to people before.  That’s kind of a conspicuously odd thing to say, though I may be reading too much into it.  The date itself is awkward, as you’d expect.  I’m dead certain he’s totally inexperience and suspect she is too.  But it does lead to the two of them eventually swapping contact info – she keeps hers under the name “Nyamero” – and a promise from her to send cat pics when she gets home.  These two really are soulmates, it seems.

Of note is that while her lock screen is the Okinawa pic, Fuyutsuki’s homepage is chibi-Himeno – which she’s desperate to keep a secret.  Flattering, certainly, but slightly unnerving at the same time.  She seems fine with adult Himuro too though, and it appears these two are going to be an official couple imminently.  The late wildcard introduced is red-haired Kotori-san, who’s an old friend (or acquaintance) of Himuro’s it seems.  He’s a descendant of something or other too, clearly (a griffin or a phoenix with that name and those wings, maybe? – I suppose we’ll be getting his backstory next week.

Indeed, it was probably inevitable that the gang got back together. Whether it was divine intervention or destiny, as Komori said, it works out well for everybody, especially for Himuro. This doesn’t seem to be the type of series to add in any unnecessary drama, which works out for the rather chill atmosphere.

I also wonder about the logistics of having employees with supernatural abilities. We’ve already seen Himuro make it snow at the office multiple times, or freeze himself multiple times. All of that ice is going to melt and create a watery mess to clean up after. Being a part of the janitorial staff at the building must be quite the job.

Himuro’s and Fuyutsuki’s date was indeed awkward, though I wonder if a part of it is because they went to posh restaurant. Perhaps going to someplace more casual would have worked better, though they both still consider it as a good experience. Maybe they should try an izakaya next time.

In the end, they both exchange contact information, which means it’s time to share cat photos! And, then we get one more addition to the cast, who seems to have fire-based powers, which contrasts with Himuro. I hope to see more from the supporting cast soon too and now that the main ship is well on the way to sailing.

  2. I love how Nyamero looks so sleepy in the picture because she just woke him up. Little details like that make this so charming.
