Osomatsu-san Season 3 – 21

Osomatsu-san is, more than any other show airing or any season of the series itself, a showcase for the seiyuu.  And that includes Endou Aya, who has what’s normally a fairly thankless role as Totoko.  She’s largely one-note on the page, though Endou does her best.  So it was really great to see her get a chance to stretch her comic chops in a big way here.

  • Pre-open is a classic “nice problem to have” scenario.  NEETs living the dream.  While it hadn’t struck me before, Choromatsu-Ichimatsu is a pretty rare pairing for Osomatsu-san if memory serves.  Maybe as the two neurotic brothers there’s too much overlap to be comedically ideal, but this was a moment for that trait to come to the fore.
  • Iyachibi” certainly came out of the blue for me.  Make no mistake, the meat of this sketch is the absurd emphasis the Japanese place on deference to seniority (really, it’s almost impossible to overstate how obsessive this country is about it).
  • That bit where they gave the Musubi two boxes full of aggravation was cold, but unerringly accurate.
  • My favorite part of this was the “Jerry” mouse hole.
  • Totoderella” was obviously the main course this week.  Once again a seiyuu-driven piece – Miyu and Hiroshi as the wicked stepsisters and Sakurai as the wicked stepmother were having way, way too much fun.
  • I don’t know why, but Totoderella calling the others uggos and then being honestly baffled why something so obvious should be an issue was really funny.  Credit to Endou here for sure.
  • Jyuushimatsu as the fairy godmother – again, pure seiyuu gold with Ono Daisuke.
  • The ending left me a little flat, honestly – would have liked a better comic payoff – but Endou is once again very funny here.
