One of your best videos yet. Felt somewhere in between a passionate, personal recommendation from a friend and a lecture from a very knowledgeable and entertaining professor. The off-the-cuff delivery was very enjoyable and reminiscent of listening to you on Notaku. Consider your FLCL-evangelizing mission accomplished! I absolutely adore Kyousougiga, so I will 100% be watching FLCL soon. Heck, maybe after I’ll do a Kyousougiga rewatch reading your episode reviews for the first time…

  2. Heh, well – that’s more or less what I was going for.

Doing the video made me want to rewatch both FLCL and Kyousougiga, actually.

If you do rewatch it eventually, could you give it the same treatment as Baccano and Seirei no Moribito where you give them episodic reviews? First time watching, I get the feeling that I’m missing most of the references so I thought it was just a good anime (7/10) but the soundtrack is really excellent and had me bobbing my head every now and then.

  4. I could, given it’s only six episodes. Next time we have a slow season (which doesn’t look like spring – spoilers) I could possibly do that.

Oh, I’d also love that if the timing works out! Knowing that you’ve blogged Moribito is a big reason I’m excited to eventually check it out…saving it for a special occasion. Then if you ever undertook the challenge of blogging Evangelion, we’d have episodic reviews of what seem like your 3 favorite/most important anime pre-LiA.

  6. I can’t imagine episodically blogging Eva – I think that would be a draining experience, first of all. And TBH I’m kind of afraid I would confront a lot of flaws which would dim my overall view of the series. But that’s not to say it could never happen.

Finished this tremendous series today. Surprised at how so many people online (even those who like it!) tend to treat it as some sort of messy, confusing WTF of a show — there’s definitely a lot to dig into, but if you focus on the characters it’s really not difficult to follow. I guess I shouldn’t be too surprised, seeing how many people yell at Shinji to get in the robot.

But yeah, really impressed with it, especially the tonal balance it achieves. It effortlessly goes all over the place while always keeping its soul. The last episode was especially stellar, and the final line actually reminded me of Neuromancer. Can’t wait to rewatch Kyousougiga and catch all the FLCL nods I’ve missed.

  8. And not only Kyousougiga, as FLCL is debatably the most influential anime ever stylistically. But I can think of few that more overtly homage it than Kyousougiga.
