From the Vault: Abenobashi Mahou Shoutengai

One of the things I hope to do with the LiA YouTube channel is celebrate older series, especially ones that are somewhat under-the-radar.  I think that applies to Abenobashi Mahou Shoutengai, the subject for the first From the Vault video (note: spoiler-free) on the channel.  This show may not be Gainax’ greatest masterpiece, but it’s a classic just the same – one of the best parodies in modern anime.

I have plenty of ideas for this series, but I’d love to hear yours – let me know what anime you’d like to see in future episodes.  And of course subscribing, liking, and general commenting is deeply appreciated!

Well, I always wondered if you watched Zipang

  2. Actually no. Which is odd since it’s a Furuhashi series from his golden era. Do you recommend it?

Hmmm, it’s difficult to recommend a series left unfinished.

OTOH it has probably the best plot I’ve seen in any anime, ever: It’s the classic story of a modern warship sent back in time (to Midway battle) The twist is that they’re Japanese, so they CAN change history …

  4. Brings back fond memories. Perhaps someone will do a “key” to the parodies, for viewers whose anime viewing isn’t encyclopedic.

Recommendation? Perhaps Saiunkoku Monogatari – a historical shoujo that subverts the tropes of otome shows in favor of showcasing the political skills of its canny, astute heroine. But it’s very long: 78 episodes over two seasons.

  5. That’s on my list but it’s a big commitment, time-wise.

  6. Hidamari no Ki is only 25 episodes… just sayin’. 😉

  7. Tezuka? Interesting. I was focusing more on series I’ve already seen as time is always scarce, but it’s worth considering.

I’ll second this. Saiunkoku Monogatari would have ended if it reached a third season that it has never get, unfortunately. Not great at visuals, expecially at the beginning, but nevertheless a classic.

I’d vote for more baseball anime coverage, of course. There are probably tons of series I’ve never heard of, since they don’t get popular in the US.

  10. I think I’ve blogged every baseball anime in the last decade that I actually liked. But there are certainly some older ones that might be a good vault candidate. Maybe even something like OoFuri.

Yeah, older series is what I meant. Lots of us enjoying Major 2nd have zero idea about the weight of the some of callbacks, for example, since Major itself isn’t available streaming.
