Back to the Future II – What’s Old is New Again

The results are in, and I sincerely thank everyone who participated in the poll and shared your comments.

As you can see, Baccano! was the clear winner.  I’m happy to start that as a “current series” – I was actually considering a rewatch anyway.  As you know, I also added third-place finisher Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, as I had access to that series and it was easy.  Seirei no Moribito finished 2nd, and as longtime readers will know that’s my all-time favorite anime.  As such you don’t need to twist my arm to get me to watch it again, though I’ve already done so more than once, and watched the live-action drama as well.  The issue there is access.  It’s not streaming anywhere that I can see, and at the moment I have no hardware to play Blu-rays.  So that’s going to require a little figuring out – if you have any suggestions, please share.

Also of note – rest assured, I got the message sent by so many of you writing in Clannad.  There’s a reason I don’t want to cover that series, and it’s not because I don’t like it.  I do, but I don’t love it (I prefer Kanon and Little Busters among Key works), and my experience with Clannad has been that it has a fanbase which is fiercely loyal and not terribly well-disposed towards criticism of it.  As such, I don’t see any point in going down that road – it would probably get negative, and that’s not the reason I’m doing this.  I’ll keep liking Clannad and those that love it can keep loving it, and we’ll both be happier that way.

Another also – I’m giving serious consideration to picking up Akatsuki no Yona.  It doesn’t meet all my ideal criteria for manga coverage – it’s not weekly, and translations aren’t available in real-time.  But it is a magnificent series, it’s semi-monthly, and translations seem to be consistent at the very least.  Let me know your thoughts.

So just to recap plans for the season:

  • Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann – Already started coverage
  • Baccano! – Will begin coverage this weekend
  • Seirei no Moribito – Investigating ways to make it happen, but logistical challenges remain
  • Akatsuki no Yona – Hmmm…

All great shows and should be in every anime fans watched list. Curious, Seirei no Moribito live-action drama….Was it any good and worth hunting down and watching?

  6. Yes and yes. Only way to find out the official ending (though my ending was pretty damn good even if I say so myself) since the novel translations died out.
