Coming Soon: From the Vault (and 2007)

The results are in, and thanks to your votes I’ll be doing a series review post on Dennou Coil.  A big thank you to everyone who voted, and especially to the LiA supporters who did the nominations.

I don’t know if I’d say I was surprised at the results, since I really had no idea what to expect.  If anything I kind of thought Toradora might be the pick (it placed third), as I get asked about that series a lot.  And I don’t get asked about Dennou Coil much, so I guess I’m mildly surprised to see it win (especially by such a wide margin).

It’s rather fitting that the voters chose a series from what I consider to be the finest season (only Spring 2012 came even a little close) and finest year in anime history.  It’s also worth noting that Dennou Coil creator Iso Mitsuo is returning to the screen in 2019 (hopefully) as director of Chikyuugai Shounen Shoujo, his first new original since DC., so the timing could hardly be better.  Having both Iso and Noein creator Akane Kazuki – whose Hoshiai no Sora is confirmed for Spring and is one of my most-anticipated shows of 2019 – return with original anime in the same year would be as good a reason for optimism as any in a good while.

I watched the first episode of Dennou Coil three times since it came out, hoping to get into it, but never made it to episode two. But hey, I’m not sold against the idea of giving it a fourth try.

You must be somewhat happy with this result, no? You’ve mentioned several times that you consider Dennou Coil an underrated gem, and I don’t seem to remember you saying anything good (or bad, for that matter) on Toradora

  2. Oh, you misremember – I had good things to say in plenty, though I never got past my fundamental dislike of the heroine.

I’m good with Dennou Coil for sure. Not what I voted for (that shall remain a secret) but I do think it’s underappreciated.

Dennou Coil is in that same category that I put Serial Experiment Lain (though not nearly as dark) which is one of those old classics that’s honestly a pretty hard sell to a lot of people more used to the current anime landscape. In a way, I think it’s why Boogiepop might be a hard sale to current light novel readers, the landscape has changed so much.

It’s also a series that I think I’ve never really seen an in depth review of from any of the anime bloggers I follow, so there’s that too XD

  4. 2007 was so great that it’s well-represented in pretty much all categories. But it definitely has more than its share of underrated gems. Hell, just from spring and just from Madhouse you had Dennou Coil and Oh! Edo Rocket. Which, by the way, had the same writer as TTGL airing that same season. What a time that was in anime.

You should do some of the other choices at a later point! I would have liked two out of the top four choices that lost out.

  6. As always, time is the issue. I’ve written a fair bit of acchi kochi stuff on several of those shows already, actually.

Apologies for the off-topic, but is Karakuri Circus officially dropped? Last two episodes have been great and up there with the series highs.

  9. No need to apologize. I’m still watching it and I agree the last two eps have been better, but nothing so good as to make me feel an urgency to post. I guess it’s not officially dropped because it’s a three-cour series and I’m still hoping to be impressed enough to jump back in, but it hasn’t happened yet.
