Kyoto Diaries – East and West, Be Our Guest

Sadly, I’ve been so busy with the new job and the new (huge) anime season that I’ve fallen hopelessly behind on the Japan diaries, too.  So I’m going to post a bunch of pics I took a couple of weekends ago, mostly in Kyoto, without a bunch of commentary (I have a bunch more from last weekend and this to get to as well).  These are a mix of Higashiyama and Arashiyama, both mountainous wings which frame Kyoto – plus a visit to the new Imperial Guest House in the middle.  This seriously blew my expectations out of the water – it’s a modern construction but absolutely gorgeous, with one of the best ponds and gardens I’ve seen in Japan.

You know how much I enjoy these posts. I hope that you find time and space for yourself to breathe despite the busyness!

I also realized I’m really late in my reply to the previous post: I didn’t take the name of the place down, but I can remember exactly where it is. Hachijodori toward Aeon mall, between Yoshinoya and Lawson.

Sadly, it seems like the place has closed its doors for good, if this capture on Google Maps is to be trusted. I really do hope the owners are just retired and are doing fine somewhere out there.

There IS an okonomiyaki place nearby that’s pretty good and is incredibly homely…

  2. Ah, well – that’s the nature of the restaurant business, sadly.

Thanks so much Enzo! I love Kyoto…simply seeing the photos put a big smile on my face already…there is so much to explore and indulge in… I guess living in Kobe makes it easier to visit Kyoto often. I feel like Kyoto is such a magical city that one can wind down, meditate and be inspired. Happy for you!

  4. Kyoto always has a surprise ready to knock your socks off, no matter how many times you visit. Yesterday (pics coming) was no different.
