Hoozuki no Reitetsu 2nd Season – 11

Thank goodness the old show biz adage “Never work with kids and animals” doesn’t apply to Hoozuki…

Though Nasubi and Karauri aren’t actually kids, of course (though you could have fooled me).

Truthfully, the more I get into this season of Hoozuki no Reitetsu the more I love it.  This is truly a wonderful anime comedy, slice of afterlife at its very best, and it’s criminally under-appreciated in the West (though happily not in Japan).  It feels so unfair that it’s almost over, given how long we’ve waited for this second season.  I have a tremendous affection for this series and I’m going to suffer some serious withdrawal when it’s no longer a staple of my Saturday mornings.

  • While we had a little taste of Karauri’s family life before (we met his Onee-san in Season 1) as far as I remember we’ve seen none of Nasubi’s.  And given how goofy he is, don’t tell me you weren’t curious.
  • That “Mambo!” song…
  • Good to know they have Shinkansen in Hell, too (also note the next stations in either direction were “Acchi” and “Kochi”).
  • That “Amazoness” logo – and it winks, to boot!
  • Nasubi’s Mom was exactly what I expected – sweet, overprotective and kind of a MILF.  As to his father being a ghost cart, though…  I don’t even want to know how that works.
  • My favorite moment of that sequence was Nasubi’s “Warukanai!” when his mother asked him about his etiquette.
  • I definitely see Karauri as the class rep who snaps once a year
  • It’s kind of sad how Hoozuki is so clueless about families, especially given his backstory.  But that ability to inject just a little pathos into the humor is something this series is exceptionally good at.
  • That whole B-part with the dogs was straightforward silliness, in a good way.  Starting with “Corgito“.
  • “It’s in our DNA to follow orders from superiors unquestioningly.”
  • Shiro is an adorable doofus.  Dumb as a stump, but how can you get mad at that mug?
  • Am I nuts, or was the “human-faced dog” played by Namikawa Daisuke?
  • I always assumed Shiro was a Hokkaido, by the way.  But I’m a cat person…

Well… now we know which side of the family Nasubi gets his two dark dots on his forehead from.

Well Hoozuki got his normal hairstyle back real quick since the last episode. It was quite good I laughed all the way through the first part and the second part was also nice the way Shiro called Momotarou all confused was funny.

    – The orchard and landscape around Karauri’s house are peppered with carnivorous plants. Nepenthes to the unrepentants, yo!
    – One gotta wonder who carried Nasubi’s pregnancy to completion :DDDD
    – Thought Shiro was a Samoiedo… :°)
    – Re: inubishie guy’s voice. I’m fine with whatever. The flavour of dem Enzo’s nuts… is this Xmas already? just watched a delectable BBC doc about British Xmas traditions cum confectionery shenanigans and related Georgian debauchery. Did you even know that sugarplums are not plums at all but actually nuts coated in 20 layers of sugar syrup btw?
    – Dobermanns DDDD,: keep’em away from me D,:
    – Corgito *3* aaaah CORGI FLUFFY BUTTS
    – a wild hell Yorkshire terrier (with its cutesy bangs-holding ribbon ) too *3*
    – metal doggo is another classic Kyashan nod.
    – Nasubi’s drawings and vaguely Gaudi-esque sculptures eveywhere in the house. What a cherished son :,)
    – Hoozuki excitedly taking pics of Kararuri’s parents attire was probably my fav both hilarious and a little sad moment in this vein.
