Osomatsu-san 2 – 09

I’m more and more in a comfort zone predicting how any given episode or chapter of Osomatsu-san is going to work for me this season.  The more outlandish and gross it is, the less likely I am to find it really funny – the track record isn’t 100% but it works far more often than not.  This wasn’t one of the most hilarious episodes of the series, but it was pleasingly low-key and rather enjoyable for that reason.

  • Always nice to see Ichimatsu get some time in the spotlight – that’s been a rarity this season.  He’s one of the more sympathetic members of the sextet.
  • Actually, when you really think about it – isn’t it just Osomatsu who’s truly an asshole, and the rest of them are kind of just good-hearted losers?
  • Again, pretty low-key on the whole, especially this chapter, but there were some good gags.  I loved that cougar bit.
  • That moment when everyone voted with Ichimatsu – and more crucially, against Osomatsu – to continue the “Brothers should be decent to each other” campaign kind of seems significant, somehow.  As significant as anything ever does in Osomatsu-san, anyway.
  • “Arcade Iyami” was likewise agreeably understated – there was no crapping in a bag, at least.
  • Iyami wearing the “183” shirt is the same as Jyuushimatsu’s “14” jersey, of course.  Little-known fact: March 18 (remember, in Japan the month comes first so it’s 18/3) is unofficially “Iyami Day” in Japan.
  • Several good bits here, but my favorite was when the arcade urchins spontaneously started calling Iyami-shishou “Dad”.
  • This “Totoko and Nyan-chan” sketch was definitely funnier than the first one.  The hashtags killed me, from both of them…  If you spend any time in Japan you’ll notice that Japanese women (sorry, but it’s true) and absolutely obsessed with food selfies.
