Osomatsu-san 2 – 20

Every time Osomatsu-san goes with one of these “sketch-a-minute” extravaganzas, it’s inevitably going to be hit and miss.  And this is for a comedy that tends to run that way anyway, since it always aims for bigger and more outrageous and believes in delivering sheer quantity of punch lines in (almost) every episode.  The twist this time is a very insider Japanese joke – the whole “variety show” theme with Dayon in the little insert box.  Now, if you’ve never seen a Japanese TV variety show there’s no reason in the world why you should get the joke – and it’s stuff like this which explains why Miyu Irino was so incredulous at the number of Osomatsu-san fans at Anime Expo.

The really funny thing is, some of those variety shows are only marginally less ridiculous than Osomatsu-san.  As for me, I had a hard time looking away from that grotesque face up in the corner – I was as keen to see what he was doing as what the brothers were doing downstairs.  That amounted to a scattergun style of humor, with somewhat mixed results:

  • Matsuno mean buns?  Eh, kind of a one-note gag.
  • The tax thing – slightly better.  Best part was Totty leading Jyuushimatsu away gently at the end to keep his head from exploding (though it should be pointed out that Choromatsu had absolutely no idea what he was doing).
  • Dayon lets out a big yawn, then resumes picking his nose…
  • Karapino” – OK, props for that.  A juvenile sight gag, but a good one.
  • The wallet sketch was classic Osomatsu-san (both the show and the character).  I wonder – did the brothers actually steal the money after all, or was Osomatsu just being a dick by suggesting he had it in the first place?
  • “8000 times” cedar pollen – pretty much a simple grossout bit here.
  • Choromatsu’s “itch” – well…
  • Jyuushimatsu the Raccoon?  OK, pretty random but again, a pretty good sight gag.  Or perhaps spoofing a Japanese kids show I’m not familiar with?
  • Todomatsu flipping out is always win.  Love to hear Miyi-Miyu derping.
  • That bread factory sketch – that was seriously dark.
  • Was that “Proper Gattai” insert song performed by Miyu-Miyu?  Sounded like it to me.
  • A timely Winter Olympics tribute…  My favorite part of this (no, not the Karapino cameo) was Osomatsu’s track record from previous competitions.

The “Proper Gattai” skit just made me almost died laughing, I don’t know why it’s so damn funny to me even when I know where are they going with it the first time Ichimatsu failed to enter the hidden base. And yes the Dayon panel was a nice touch.

I’m not really sure about the Jyushimatsu The Raccoon Skit, but it oddly remind me of that video of someone keep giving cotton candy to a raccoon and then apparently a raccoon will always wet the food first, so every time the cotton candy dissolves and the raccoon just shocked that the cotton candy disappears. It could refer to that, or maybe some Japanese kid show I don’t know.

  2. Well, raccoons have no saliva (which I find to be a very odd evolutionary trait) so they have to wash everything they eat.

As far as I know, Matsuno means a certain type of bonsai pine (in the Hesokuri Wars game it’s verified in the “American Musical High Scool “set since they’re “The Pinefields”: Orson Pinefield, Todd Pinefield, Itchy Pinefield…, so the “Pine” is their symbol xD), that’s the reason behind the tree in their parkas ; about the racoon, it indeed is a japanese kids anime named “Rascal the racoon”; and about Osomatsu’s wallet money, judging by the remaining sextuplets face… nop, they didn’t steal a thing is just Osomatsu showing us what an extent of scum he is (sorry, it just made me despise him even more) and that maybe the so called “leader” of the sextuplets was the one that ruined them as you mentioned before since indeed they’re good but unlucky guys for having such a terrible big brother, maybe, like what happened in last season’s episode 24, they’d be able to be more decente without his influence…, and I think he also forgot that he had already used that money, but he’s still a despicable one.

  4. Ah yes, “Rascal” – I have heard of that, now you mention it.
