I really, really wanted to like this adaptation of Tozen Ujiie’s 4-koma manga. I love comedies, and I’ve really enjoyed several recent 4-koma anime incarnations. I was a huge fan of Seitokai no Ichizon, and it’s impossible not to see the similarities here. Only guy on a student council full of zany, tsundere girls… The twist here is that Takatoshi Tsuda is one of the few boys at a previously all-girls high school. He’s drafted into the student council as a vice-president before he’s even through the door on his first day. Hilarity ensues.
Or…not. Honestly, even though the jokes were a mile-a-minute, a remarkably small percentage of them were even modestly amusing. Short jokes, really? About 20 of them, in fact. Anal masturbation, repeated references to the female reproductive cycle – really, 22 minutes of this. It felt as if the incessant sexual and bodily-function references were there mostly for shock value. None of the girls on the council distinguished themselves as anything beyond one-dimensional stereotypes.
On balance, we’re off to a sluggish start this summer, so I’m loathe to give up on any series after one episode – so I suppose I’ll tune in next week and see if this thing grabs me in any way.
