I finally found a more mismatched show to pair with Btooom!
Kamisama Hajimemashita – 08
Even when Kamisama Hajimemashita is being serious, it can’t help being funny. This week every scene involving Mikage and his sidekick Otohiko (Takahashi Hiroki) was a riot. Otohiko is yet another in a line of utterly preposterous side characters Kamisama has introduced, and this one is -completely over-the-top, right up to his “Runrun!” when he went in for a dip. As for Mikage, his choice in swimwear could use some work, but I’m interested to see him incorporated into the plot at last. I’m still not sure exactly where he stands, but he’s certainly going to be a wild card.
As for Otohiko, he seems to have an interest in making things difficult for Tomoe, which he does by causing the always hilariously dense Ami to nearly drown, necessitating her rescue by Tomoe – who Nanami begs to do so despite his having told her he can’t enter the sea. The reason is Sukana (an excellent Namikawa Daisuke) who seeks revenge for Tomoe defeating him and gouging one of his eyes out 526 years earlier.
The reality we’re dealing with here is either an anime-original ending or no real ending at all, as we’re only a fraction of the way into the manga, but we’re close enough to the finish line that this arc may in fact end up being the climax of the anime. As to whether we’ll see any development on the romance front I’m skeptical, but honestly the romance interests me a lot less here than the humor and the outstanding supporting cast so I’m fine either way.
Btooom! – 08
I’m hard-pressed to think of another recent anime that takes quite so dim a view of human nature as this one does. Everyone is evil in their own fashion, and no one is to be trusted – apart, perhaps, from Sakamoto and maybe Himiko and Taira. It’s hard to escape the feeling that the mangaka believes most od the poor souls trapped on this island got exactly what they deserved.
New to the cast is Murasaki Shiki (Fukami Rica) a survivor of the last game (of how many, we don’t know) who was betrayed by the Doctor who was the reason she ended up there in the first place, and got her hand blown off for her trouble. She’s another in Himiko’s “don’t trust anyone with a Y chromosome” brigade, but it would be wrong to call Btooom a misandrist series since it’s every bit as misogynistic as misandrist.
We also get a considerable download of info about Tyrannus and what they’re up to, and it looks to be a live stream of the carnage on the island – though the CEO deems the real footage of men being eaten by Komodo Dragons too grisly, and decides on CGI with real audio. We’ve had the character of folks from pretty much every walk of life eviscerated here – doctors, lawyers, salesmen, businessmen – it’s an ugly world, and it’ll be interesting to see how all this is brought to a resolution. Personally, the gang at Tyrannus trump all the rest of them as far as sheer irritating scumbaggery as far as I’m concerned, and if there’s any justice to be dispensed at the end of this preposterous but involving amorality play I hope they’re squarely on the receiving end.

November 26, 2012 at 3:47 pmThere are too few episode left in order to let Sakamoto make them pay for their crime. The only way it could happen is, Tyrannos getting busted by the police and taken away on a truck. LOL.

November 26, 2012 at 6:22 pmIs Btooom only a 1 cour series? If so they are going to need to start wrapping things up here hella fast, it's getting increasingly difficult to see how they get to a satisfying conclusion from here. Of course with this show they might just go with a "everybody dies, the end" style of ending.

November 27, 2012 at 3:45 amActually, so far they have adapted 5 volumes of the 9 currently released, so at the speed they´re going I suspect by the time the anime is over it´ll have covered up to the 7th or 8th book at its best.
My belief is that Manglobe will go to the "till next season (if we ever produce one)" route while they wait for the manga to be furthered or concluded…

November 27, 2012 at 6:01 amlol, Enzo, you just HAVE to put Btooom! with another series side by side and contrast them don't you? xD
On the dim view of human nature comment, I think Madhouse has been at the forefront of it for quite a while now, Btooom! is really just another one added to their track record. I had a pretty hard time digesting Rainbow too, but that show at least had an optimistic outlook despite the very twisted situations the characters were forced into.

November 27, 2012 at 6:51 am@Enzo: You've read the Kamisama manga?
I'm ok with Btooom! but it's not outstanding either…I guess the story line is just something that's tried before and…I don't know. There's something insipid about it…

November 27, 2012 at 10:12 amNo, I haven't read it, but I know we're only in the early stages of it in the anime adaptation.

November 27, 2012 at 8:58 amBest sight gag in Kamisama this week was the Earth God stripping down to a speedo then face-planting in the water when he attempted to dive in. Apparently, Earth Gods can't just distance & depth very well. 🙂
