Mairimashita! Iruma-kun 2nd Season – 16

The thing about Iruma-kun is this.  While he has many faces – the default moemoe Iruma, “evil” Iruma, angry Iruma – they’re all basically the same kid.  As we saw when Ronove laid his hand on Ameri uninvited, angry Iruma is always on-call, ready to be summoned as needed.  And evil Iruma, as we also saw, was basically good Iruma with his inhibitions lifted.  And whichever face he’s showing at any given moment, Iruma is a good guy to have a friend but a bad one to have as an enemy.

Iruma’s reaction to the park terrorist attack was totally in-character.  He’s deeply wounded at having his playground and happy place defiled by whoever is responsible.  He’s literally in tears at the unfairness of it all.  But Iruma’s gift is that he channels negative emotions into positive actions (he never would have survived his childhood if he didn’t).  And thus, he takes it on himself to make a difference – in this case, rescuing the kids trapped under the collapsed building.  Startled (and a little shamed) into action by this are Azz and Sablo – each for their own reasons.

Meanwhile we get our first look in a while at Team Opera, who have the giant rat to contend with.  As with Kallego, the sense is really that Opera could handle this by himself without too much trouble.  But Ameri isn’t having that – despite Opera’s orders to take the others to safety and hide, she returns to battle because her pride won’t allow otherwise.  Clara returns too, ostensibly to provide weapons in case the others need them but in truth to make a general nuisance of herself and provide comic relief (both of which she does at professional level).

Opera is naturally curious (heh) and because of that we get to see Ameri really unleash her talent for the first time.  “Romantista” is an interesting one – basically magically-enhanced self-hypnosis.  This is a deceptively powerful but dangerous ability – her strength is as unlimited as her imagination, but if self-doubt creeps in it collapses like a house of cards.  Not to mention that even in super-seiyan mode her body still takes normal damage.  Opera’s offer to have her come work under him leads to the comic highlight of the episode as Ameri imagines what that would be like.

As for Team Kallego, Jazzy has come up with a plan for the boys to marry their abilities and take down their opponent.  The key is the whistle that Kallego referenced, a gift to Jazzy from his obnoxious older brother.  It’s a good plan and well-executed, but it was probably naive to think that a punctured eardrum was going to take down that mountain.  As you’d expect Kalleo-sensei is standing by to prevent the boys from taking any real damage – which they would have as a result of their overconfidence.  At last Kallego is having fun – and he insists on a group selfie to document it.

  1. Kalego is a true teacher. Never wasting a teachable opportunity by letting his charges work it out themselves but ready to step in when things get gnarly. He definite appears to be having fun – maybe due to the opportunity to let off steam.

Next is Opera. Opera is probably the most ovepowered out of the 3 chaperones. I think he could easily take down all 3 monsters if you let him do so.

Iruma basically shamed his whole team into action.

  2. Opera is OP to the point where it would be a problem in a true shounen battle series, but as this is a comedy it’s no big.

As for Kallego yes, he is a truly good teacher – the kind you hate when you have him and then realize later how much he did to help you.

I laughed quite a bit when I realized that Ameri’s special ability is basically being a shounen protagonist where refusing to give up and believing in yourself is a literal powerup. It got even funnier when she started subconsciously singing Crocell’s song to keep herself psyched up. She has pretty much won my vote in who Iruma ends up with because of this fight, but I appreciate that the show is doing a good job in showing the other love interests also helping or being supportive in their own way such as Crocell using her fame and abilities to keep the panicking tourists calm or Clara nonchalantly hanging off the monster’s appendages while planning to provide equipment. This is one of the rare shows where I would probably be fine regardless of which girl the protagonist ended up with.

  4. I don’t know if he expressly ends up with anybody as this isn’t really a romance series, but if he does Ameri’s certainly seems like the path of least resistance. Or Azz.

This was around the point that I really started to love the group dynamics of the Misfits as a whole. The Evil Iruma arc was when they started to get fleshed out inidividually, but there’s just not quite the feeling of a ‘class’ of ragtag misfits who all end up best friends until the group fights break out. I don’t know how many more (if any) seasons Iruma-kun will get but god do I hope with every fiber of my being it becomes a long running unicorn, because there’s so many more arcs with these lovable idiots becoming Iruma’s found family that I would sell my right kidney to see animated.
