What the hell, with only three eps left I decided to finish out Mairimashita! Iruma-kun over at RC. My post on Episode 21 is here.

February 25, 2020 at 5:56 amWelcome back to the Iruma-kun train. You need an antidote to Pet. Actually, we all do.

February 25, 2020 at 7:29 amIf 2020 ends up being as sparse as it looks from here, Iruma-kun could actually be a contender for the top 10. I certainly never would have predicted that.

February 26, 2020 at 4:27 amI still love the series but it’s very interesting coming back to earlier arcs now that I’ve caved and read the manga (then caved and bought the Japanese tankobons when I realized the scanlations were over 100 chapters behind) because I think this series does cohesive side character arcs better than most other shounen series around currently.
But it’s always retained the sense of levity and just general optimism that I didn’t realize I missed in anime and manga until I realized how overwhelmingly edgy or serious or just ‘trying to be cool and meta’ most of my palette is currently in comparison. It’s just a very good feel good show

February 26, 2020 at 7:39 amThat pretentiousness you refer to is something that’s developed in an attempt to appeal directly to the foreign market, IMO. Rightly or wrongly the perception is that sort of “edgy and cool” content is what the Western audience generally and Netflix specifically want.

February 27, 2020 at 11:40 amThe irony is palpable.
Though the only thing I could think of when you said Netflix, edgy, and anime in the same comment is remembering the train wreck that was Enter the Anime which legitimately had access to some of the most artistic and talented creators of the scene and just like….went way, WAY too edge. Like I would’ve watched a nature documentary styled show about these people’s life and probably been super engaged.
I think a little bit of edge is fine, I don’t need 100% Iruma-kun 100% of the time but it really does stand out in the current landscape a lot more I feel.

February 27, 2020 at 6:51 amI was much more intrigued with Iruma-kun during the starting episodes, because I thought that the show was really queer at that point. Now… I’m not so sure.

February 28, 2020 at 11:27 amWelp, if the coronavirus is gonna wipe out the world, at least Iruma-Kim can give me a little pick-me-up among all this chaos the world seems to be in.
