It’s always nice to touch base with a series after its TV run has ended, and Tsurune is certainly no exception. As for the “Yabai” OVA, well, that’s nothing really yabai about it. This is straight down the middle for an OVA episode in the current era – pretty much stand-alone, not too serious, and distinctly separate from the main series in terms of vibe. Not every OVA or special follows this routine these days, but it’s certainly the norm and I’ve come to expect it.
The plot, such as it is, concerns an idol named Noririn who’s tapped to film a special at Masa-san’s shrine, where he teaches her kyuudou (as unlikely as that sounds). Given that Masa knows nothing about idols he taps into the kyuudou squad to see if anyone can give him an idea of what to expect, but none of them are big Noririn fans either. Fortunately Nanao remembers that one of the Kirisaki boys was wearing a Noririn T-shirt after the tournament (no, I didn’t check to see if that was actually true), and he ends up testing Masa’s worthiness to teach archery to his goddess.
If all that sounds pretty fluffy, there’s a reason for that – it is. There are a couple of nice moments in the B-part where the “exam” turns into an impromptu lesson for the boys of both teams, and Masa starts waxing philosophical about kyuudou being like falling in love. All in all though it’s just a mildly amusing diversion, though this kind of broad comedy is perhaps not Tsurune’s strongest suit. It’s a better series when it goes for the feels (which some OVAs do try and do) than for the laughs, on the whole.
