Boo, no Eden post-credits short this week. It’s 100% spy action, and perfectly competent at that. Truth be told though that’s not really why I watch Spy X Family. And it’s where the show’s inconsistent moral compass starts spinning its most wildly. Not to mention two of the series’ worst characters, Yuri and Nightfall, feature prominently and that’s never a good thing.
We can certainly take away from this episode that Yuri is no match for Loid in a fight, though I don’t suppose we can call that a surprise. It’s also very notable that Loid hesitated in killing Yuri, which to be brutally frank someone in his position should never do. Not even if Yor were his actual wife (which of course she isn’t). It doesn’t work that way, and he knew the score when he laced up his boots and took the field. Not to mention he knows Yuri both works for the Stasi and is personally a pretty horrible individual.
Honestly, I find it hard to fault Wheeler’s thinking here. In his line of work the Mulder mantra makes a whole lot of sense. He’s a hell of an agent, too, which makes his getting felled by Nightfall and the power of love come off as pretty ridiculous. He bested Loid though, which is about the first time we’ve seen that happen, even if Loid has the excuse of having been shot in the arm and just brawled with Yuri. SxF can be better than this but it can be worse, too. So given that the season as a whole has been a step up, I’m fine that that.
