At some point you just have to give credit where it’s due. The ability of Fumetsu no Anata e to actually keep getting weirder, in spite of the seeming impossibility of the task, is truly impressive. Every time you think it’s topped out it moves the goal posts. In all seriousness, it takes real talent to write a series like that. Not joking – it absolutely does. But that only gets you so far. Has there been a show of recent vintage that makes so many bad choices? Up to now the wonder is “how can a show make that many bad choices and still keep me invested?” But we’re not far away from the point where the second half of that sentence – and maybe not just that – gets dropped.
This whole Mimori-Hirotoshi subplot is a whiff on every level. Both of them are creepy, and their relationship even creepier. Both of them are annoying. I mean, credit where it’s due for making me actually miss Mizuha, I guess. But my gosh, what a mess. I sort of get where Ooima is going with it, trying to use it as a device to frame the current Nokker dynamic in a different way. But there were surely better ways to go about it. One question that often pops into my mind when watching To Your Eternity is “did this series just not have any editors?”. Or maybe with two popular titles under her belt, Ooima just has the power to tell them to fuck off.
In any event, we at least move on to the next stage with Mimori finally shamed into taking her body back and Nokker-mori destroyed in a bucket of- what, fireworks? The girl who showed up to do that is a second-year at their school, Yuuki tells Fushi. Though of course she’s actually a Nokker. At least in their minds the Nokkers apparently do see this is some sort of crusade of mercy, co-existing with humans for their own good. I’m not sure that will stay Fushi’s hand at all – we know how Nokker confrontations usually end up. I just hope the series manages to recover to at least a shell of what it was when it started this season in surprisingly good – and coherent – fashion.
