Another week in the books, and we’re one step closer to the end of Katsute Mahou Shoujo to Aku wa Tekitai shiteita. and zero steps closer to me understanding it. I still have no clue what the thinking behind this show is. And at this point that means I probably never will, as anything but a non-ending ending seems almost impossible at this point. How can they wrap up the story in 10 minutes when they haven’t even started really telling it?
I’ll get into the matter more deeply next week if that is indeed what happens, but this series raises an interesting philosophical question of what should be done with the unfinished work of an author no longer with us. Fujiwara Cocoa died tragically young, leaving Katsute Mahou Shoujo very much as you see it here. Is it better to tell a sliver of a story just to bring her last work to the world, even if it doesn’t really stand as a story at all? Should one try to give is a sense of conclusion if the original author never had the chance? I’m not smart enough to know but as I said, I’ll revisit if indeed the finale is what I expect.
As is, this penultimate episode was more of the same. Byakuya is afraid of a ghost in the apartment (which we’re to believe is real, though Mr. Familiar is right – given what the three main characters are, it’s not a stretch). The cat is away, and Byakuya ends up begging Mira to spend the night. Mira gets the wrong idea here obviously, though I’m curious to know what he would have done had his misapprehensions been on the money. At ¥9000 a month (less than $70) for rent in Tokyo, unwanted houseguests are hardly a surprise.
I always find myself missing F*ck-girl and the familiars whenever they’re not around, because if I’m honest, Mira and Byakuya are just too one-note for me, and the note is sweet. All that cuteness is fine, and Bones’ art and animation for their tender moments is chef’s kiss. But I have no emotional stake in them as a couple – we don’t really know either of them as actual characters, just plot drivers. All in all Katsute Mahou Shoujo to Aku wa Tekitai shiteita. just has the air of something very unfinished about it. And in truth, that’s almost certainly because that’s exactly what it is.

September 21, 2024 at 5:06 amIt’s the penultimate episode and you’re right that basically nothing happened. So, it seems that Byakuya’s apartment is haunted. Then again, looking at how shabby it is and considering the suspiciously low rent, there may have been a few deaths there (Or murders done there…). The paranormal activity has escalated lately and it’s bad enough that she’d rather sit outside in the cold. Mira finds out as she was late to the day’s meeting and so he pays her a visit. Mira himself finished his day from work in which they had enough free time to do personality quizzes. I’ll give them a pass here as Warumomo-san sometimes looked up pandas during company time.
Right, Byakuya begs him to stay the night with her. He does get the wrong idea, though he’s still not exactly upset at the prospect of spending the night at her place. And alone too since Mr. Familiar isn’t around. It turns out that nothing bothered them that night and then the cat returned next morning to exorcise the spirits in the room (Oh yeah, he is an angel). It was hoping that it would drive her to find a better place, but, hey, at least it’s not haunted now. I’m not expecting much of anything to happen in the finale either and this episode really needed the edge from Hibana and her balding familiar.
