Katsute Mahou Shoujo to Aku wa Tekitai shiteita. – 07

Katsute Mahou Shoujo to Aku wa Tekitai shiteita. is definitely one of those series where the seiyuu carry a big load. This story, if we’re honest, is very silly. It certainly isn’t grounded in any reality, even in-context. The visuals are undeniably lovely but the cast has to bring this material to life and give it some traction. Fortunately between Miki Shinichirou and Midorikawa Hikaru selling out as the “angels” and Ise Mariya dropping F-bombs everywhere, it’s in very good hands there.

Notably missing from that paragraph are Ono Yuuki and Nakahara Mai, who play Mira and Byakuya respectively. They’re both good actors (Nakahara especially is a favorite of mine) but they don’t stand out that much. And neither do their characters, which is really the whole point. Byakuya is cute and Mira’s navel-gazing is amusing, but that’s about as far as it goes. Their love affair is the heart of the story but the truth is it – and they – are both pretty plain yogurt. That’s why the arrival of F*ck Girl and Bird came just in the nick of time.

Speaking of Hibana and love affairs, the revelation that she and Byakuya are the same age (they were elementary school classmates) is rather jarring. I had been under the impression that Byakuya, despite her appearance, was in her early 20’s (someone in the comments told me that, I think). Her being 15(ish) certainly cements Cat-man’s scumbag status, not like it needed much cementing. But it also casts Mira’s intentions towards Byakuya in rather a different light. Whatever age he is in his alien (is he even an alien?) world, he’s for damn sure too old to be the lover of a 15 year-old.

And it seems very obvious that these two are in love. Bird-man pointing that out may have sent Byakuya and Mira on tilt, but clearly it was because it’s true. As far as the whole good guys vs. evil organization thing, it seems like we really aren’t even going through the motions anymore. Mira and Byakuya are playing Reversi at her place while Cat and Bird are arguing about- well, pretty much everything, and Hibana is gnawing on her “friend’s” head.

The main source of amusement is indeed those two going at it like cats and birds (Pussy accusing Birdy of being a loli was the highlight). And they have human forms too, maybe their true forms (in Heaven?). Which would mean they chose those familiar form? That, and Hibana’s frankly hilarious take on the tsundere trope. Give her credit, she’e embracing the label to the fullest – those wresting moves and MMA attacks and shark bites complement her verbal abuse splendidly. If she and Byakuya are indeed friends, Hibana needs a lot of counseling over her way of expressing affection.
