April 18, 2024 at 1:33 amGreat episode. For some reason I expected you were going to do Spirit Circle as your first manga recommendation! You mentioned that YKK had a following in English long before it was officially translated. That sort of disproves the argument that fan translations undermine a manga’s potential to get licensed, doesn’t it? (I don’t know how well the Yen Press edition is selling, but they’ve put out 7 volumes already, so it can’t be a commercial disaster.)
I said this in the comments on the YouTube page, but — I hope Samu’s not mistaken about there being a Kowloon Generic Romance anime adaptation in the works. For a while now I was assuming that they wouldn’t be able to adapt that manga, just because of all the tobacco use. The US publication of the manga has an Parental Advisory warning on the cover of every volume, although there’s no nudity, swearing or violence to speak of… but there’s also a cigarette on every cover, and there’s probably a lit cigarette in more than half of the pages, too.

April 18, 2024 at 9:12 amI already replied to that, but there was a “reliable leak” that KGW was getting an anime. Pretty confident that will happen.
I think that argument is bogus on the face of it and always has been. Fansubs created anime fandom in the West, and scanlations were vital for the eventual success of many manga. Once it’s licensed, it’s a different story.
