First Impressions – Dead Mount Death Play

Maybe he has a sister named Dot?

Narita Ryohgo changes the venue from Ikebukuro to Shinjuku for this isekai outing, based on a manga co-authored with Fujimoto Shinto.  I’m obviously not normally that focused in on isekai, especially in a season like this one.  But a couple of factors persuaded me to at least take a peek here, Narita’s presence being one of them (Baccano! is a masterpiece after all, and Durarara has its moments).  Also the fact that it’s a manga and not a LN.  Of course Narita is primarily a light novelist, but the product of a different era in LNs.

Narita being the writer helps explain the weird names – he has a thing for those.  The story here is about a necromancer, the “Corpse God“, who transports himself to modern Tokyo at the moment he’s killed by the great hero Sir Shagrua.  There, he takes over the body of the aforementioned Shinoyama Polka – immediately after he’s had his throat cut by a very annoying assassin dressed like a schoolgirl.  Why Polka had a hit out on him isn’t explained, nor is the fate of the original inhabitant of the body T.C.G. is now squatting in.

Making the demon lord the one to isekai is at least somewhat uncommon, I’ll give Dead Mount Death Play that much.  The pre-isekai moments of this premiere are pretty tedious, but once the jump happens things pick up a bit,  The execution (no pun intended) is pretty good (the staff has a ton of experience) and I’m modestly interested in seeing which direction Narita takes things.  DMDP is already greenlit for two split cours, and it seems like a longshot to be something I’d actually cover.  But as a diversion this was pretty decent, so I’ll at least watch another ep or two for now.
