Spy x Family – 23

To be honest there’s not a lot to say about this week’s S x F that I didn’t say last week.  If you liked it, great –  for me it was a washout.  It was only fitting that the whole painting thing turned out to be a complete waste of time, because that’s what the last two episodes were as far as I’m concerned.  The animation was quite good (I’m guessing it was a Wit week).  The tennis ball gag with Yor was okay.  But Fiona is a real problem.  Ultimately she’s like Yuri – the fundamental problem is that they aren’t funny, but there are supplementary reasons why both are skeevy (in her case the whole infatuation with Loid and how it’s handled it really demeaning).

In fact, only one thing here was genuinely interesting, and it was this shot from the preview.  Is that young Loid or Damian?

Ultimately, this arc showed that Endo really needed to switch things up in the manga after subjecting readers to this arc for nearly 3 months (thanks to both the height of the pandemic in 2020 and his erratic schedule). Those who enjoyed this arc, good for you! This episode was well-animated and paced far better than the manga for people to go home happy.

I’m instead looking forward to what Endo cooked up soon after this unfortunate arc which I’ve heard is far superior and helped improve overall impressions of the manga. But with just two episodes left, it won’t be able to cover much of it.

  2. Well, it’ll all get adapted sooner or later.

It has been some time since I read what occurs after this arc, but I do remember it being pretty good. The story makes more progress in Loid’s actual objective, It explores some of Loid’s past (the boy and his mother at the end), and we do finally get a big arc focusing on Yor’s job. I am not sure if we will reach Yo’r arc before the end of this season though. Might be the big arc of next season.

This arc comes to an end, thank goodness. It wasn’t a complete waste of time for me, though it was pretty close. Loid and Fiona win the match by overcoming all of the obstacles thrown at them and even manage to motivate Campbell’s son to start playing tennis cleanly. Bonus mission also cleared, I suppose.

The code is acquired and it’s time to go home. They come across the rest of the Forgers at at park and Fiona wants to challenge Yor. Loid tries to warn Fiona, but to no avail. One supersonic serve later and Fiona’s sent packing. I’m hoping we won’t see her again for a while. It seems that Loid has been practicing against Yor like this and apparently doesn’t think there’s anything off about that.

Finally, the code is broken and there aren’t any national security implications. Well, that’s that. It looks like it should set up the next arc with both Loid and Yor considering the state of their family.
