Tonikaku Cawaii ~Seifuku~ (OVA)

Well, he’s not wrong.

As we wait on the “sometime in 2023” second season of Tonikaku Cawaii, we get another OVA to tide us over.  Par for this series is charming and loveable, so you can pretty much assume that – the main couple is just too cute and nice.  And OVA’s, as a rule, tend not to wade into matters too weighty.  So the content here was probably about what one should have been expecting – breezy and amusing, with a side of sensual.  But it did advance things a fair bit as far as that elephant in the, er- room.

The theme of this series is exactly what the title suggests, uniforms.  Specifically, how Nasa’s proclivities manifest themselves, and how to push his buttons.  Which, let’s be honest, since he’s an 18 year-old male should pretty much be “breathing”.  We start out with Nasa and Tsukasa watching one of those goofy-ass quiz shows Japanese TV loves so much.  The gist of it is that Nasa is as smart and knowledgeable as he is modest – but we already knew that.  What grates Tsukasa’s cheese is that he keeps getting the questions right while furiously programming on his laptop, with never a pause.

Aya – and eventually Charlotte – intervene at this point for reasons.  And their strategy to distract Nasa is to dress Tsukasa in Charlotte’s maid uniform which, if we’re honest, is a very good strategy.  The effect is immediate and pronounced, though in spite of his understandable response Nasa still aces the questions on TV.  No reason whatsoever why Nasa shouldn’t be turned on by Tsukasa in a maid uniform – though truthfully she looks great in pretty much anything.  He’s also right that the white lab coat thing is even hotter (though sadly we don’t get to see that apart from in Nasa’s imagination).

This levels up in every way when Kaname gets involved.  She’s the most open about sex so she often has that effect.  When she hears from her sister about the goings on, she decides to probe a little deeper regarding Sempai’s preferences.  Eventually the topic comes around to school uniforms, as Kaname convinces Nasa that he and Tsukasa are missing out on the normal high school relationship (along with high school generally, of course).  This is the first I’ve heard about “seifuku dating” being some kind of trendy thing (much less in Germany).  I also don’t think it’s remotely normal for high school girls to have “eight or nine” different uniforms in the closet.  But hey, I still think TikTok is the sound clocks make so don’t take my word for it…

Now again, Nasa is perfectly right here – Tsukasa in a school uniform is seriously hot.  And I don’t blame him one little bit for wanting to keep that side of their relationship private.  Which it eventually is, when the two nosy sisters are finally ushered out and the extent to which Nasa is triggered by this becomes apparent.  It would have been nice to have seen Tsukasa’s turn-ons get equal time here, but this is still a very nice intimate moment between the two of them.

In point of fact, this may be as close as the anime has come to implying that these two are in fact a fully-functioning married couple in the bedroom (well – on the floor).  Which they sure as hell should be, given that he’s 18 and she biologically seems to be too (even if she is actually 600 or whatever she really is).  That business with the stockings and what came after was Nasa at his most assertive, so maybe we’re to take from that the pair of them are as they should be when the cameras are turned off.  I suppose the second season will shed a little more light on that, and it can’t get here soon enough for me.  There’s not nearly enough in anime featuring couples at this stage of a relationship, never mind couples as wonderful as this one.

My boi Nasa over here getting bricked up through 90% of the episode.

Married couples being honest about their attraction and love, specially the physical part of it, I love to see it.

It’s really kind of weird how in-universe chaste so many anime couples tend to be, specially when juxtaposed with the fanservice most anime seem to have. This series remains a breath of fresh air.
