As promised, as part of the new era for LiA I’ve decided to start doing commissions. It’s finally real – my shingle is out and I’m open for business. This is a new venture for me and as such, I expect there to be a good deal of trial and error to the rollout – please bear with me!
I do have some larger projects in mind, which I will be funding using the traditional crowdfunding method – that is, “All or Nothing”, where your pledge is not accepted until the overall project goal has been met. I plan to fund these through Indiegogo, and I will provide links here as the projects go online. Look for the first of those to go live in the next few days (if you follow me on Twitter you have a good idea what it might be).
If you have some some specific ideas for projects you’d like to see crowdfunded – anime, manga, TV, whatever the case may be – let me know and I’ll explore the possibility of listing them at Indiegogo. I’m open to the idea of doing episodic “From the Vault” or chapter/volume manga reviews, but the cost will obviously be considerably higher than single-post series reviews. I’m interested in your opinions on that, so please share them in the comments. It may be possible to do a “pay as you go” model with these, where I do another episode/volume every time a funding threshold is reached (that could be done though existing support channels). My default with new projects is “when in doubt, ask me”. I’m open to any suggestions you have.
This post specifically is about single-user commissions – smaller undertakings with a lower cost viability threshold for me. What I’m going to do for now is pin this rates list, and if you’d like to fund a project just let me know directly in the comments and you can do a pledge via Patreon, PayPal, or Ko-fi – whichever is your preference. If you fund a project, you’ll get exclusive access to the work for a week before it goes public. I’ll also note who the supporter is at the time of publishing, and supporter recognition will be part of all posts for that project.
With that in mind, here are the initial rates I’m going with:
- ”From the Vault” anime series review – $100 (assuming I’ve watched the series in question). 500-1000 words. For shows I haven’t seen, we can discuss on a case-by-case basis.
- ”From the Vault” anime video – $300 (if I’ve seen it). 10-20 minutes.
- Manga review – $100 (if I’ve read it). See above for series I have not read.
- Manga video – $300 (if I’ve read it). 10-20 minutes.
- Current Season Episodic Anime Coverage (for shows I’m not already covering) – $75/Episode
- Ongoing Manga Coverage – $50/Chapter
- Anime/General film review – $100
- Anime/General film video – $250
- Top 5/10 List – $35
- Haiku – 5 bucks
- Industry-themed Editorial/Analysis – Varies by length and topic. Reach out to me.
- Episodic “From the Vault” Anime Coverage – see above
- Chapter/Volume Manga Coverage – IBID
Some ground rules:
- Obviously, I reserve the right to decline any commission. I’m not going to take money to write about something I’m categorically disinterested in writing about – that would be unfair to both of us. That said, if you have an idea I’m always willing to listen – writing about something analytically doesn’t mean I have to love it.
- As far as turnaround goes, it depends on the request. I would guess I’d be able to do most one-off requests within two weeks (maybe less). But if it involves watching or reading something of any length, that’s obviously going to take longer, and this is also partially dependent on how busy I am at the time the commission comes in. Reach out to me with specific requests and I’ll nail down the timing as best I can.
That’s about the size of it. I’m looking forward to seeing how these bold new chapter in LiA’s history plays out – I honestly have no idea what to expect. As always, though, I’m supremely grateful to everyone who visits the site and to all of you who support LiA financially. Thank you!

October 22, 2022 at 6:21 pmAlright, I’ll see what I can think of when it comes requesting commissions. A few ideas have already floated to the top of my mind and I’ll try to narrow it down.
