Tenchi Souzou Design-bu – 11

This series inspires more Googling than anything else on the schedule.

This season has really flown by for whatever reason, and we’re already in “penultimate week” (heck, even finales for oddballs like Higurashi).  I’m going to miss Tenchi Souzou Design-bu, which has been my reliable escape show this season.  Every episode is funny and a little (or a lot) educational, and the cast has  real charm to it.  The theme this time is basically how much better a client Hell is than God – and if you’re ever worked in a creative environment, you understand the essential truth of this sort of scenario.  This manga is written by a biology professor, but it plays as if it was written by an ad creator.

  • The cliffhanger is dealt with pretty quickly, but that’s in character with the sort of series this is.  Lima beans screaming for help was a new one on me, as was piranhas eating bits of fin (I doubt it’s a courtesy to their victims but it is efficient).
  • Cassava being toxic I did know about, now that I think about it.  I knew there was a reason I hated bubble tea.
  • Why didn’t Otter-chan regress too?
  • Giant otter scary.
  • That bit about caterpillars calling for ant rescue when attacked was a new one on me, and prompted a furious bit of Googling.  I knew there was larva that secreted food for ants but I just thought they hung around the nest (which they do).  They also apparently smell like ant larvae – which they eat, under their chemical camouflage.  Literally biting the hand that feeds them.
  • Giant torso demon.  That’s one Hell of a good client to accept that without a request for revisions.
  • “Boof!”
  • I guess skeletons are a great gift for a demon lord.  Only make horses having canines – for biting other males – was yet another bit of new information for me.
  • Koalas eating poop – finally one I knew.  They’re kind of disgusting little buggers in a lot of ways, no matter how cute they are.
  • I’m not sure if there’s any deeper messaging to Heaven pushing Unabara-san to exhausting while Hell urges him to be creative and himself, but trust me, clients like the former are a lot more common.
  • Female rabbits punching males to test their mettle.  No comment.

Now the big question – will we actually meet God in the finale?  I suppose I’d offhand wondered about that but I kind of assumed the series would just leave him as a mysterious, unseen presence.  If it does show Him I’m going to be very interested in seeing what direction it takes.

I think I may have missed something, what happened to the blonde angel chick since she’s also part of the cast, why wasn’t she invited to hell’s party?

  2. Never occurred to me. I mean, she’s always been kind of a minor figure. The bug guys didn’t get invited either.

One of the biggest surprises for me this season, and I’m actually kind of sad it’s ending soon. I never knew guessing animals from their skeletons would be this fun.
