The blossoms have opened early again this year, and I ventured over to Kyoto and environs for the second in my Life in Japan series.. Along the way there’s a re-visit to Omi Jingu, and a first visit to the Karuta Hall of Fame.

April 3, 2021 at 2:04 amSo, so, so thankful for this post and video. I miss travelling so much. A few years back, I was in Kyoto soaking up all the cherry blossoms that I could get. I was super excited for not just the cherry blossoms but really being in Kyoto. Of course, I always wanted to go back but can’t…this timely post totally quenched my thirst. I am so glad that you’re living so close to Kyoto. I hope that you’re doing well, Enzo.

April 3, 2021 at 8:44 amThanks. It’s a stressful time what with the pandemic response being so hapless here, that’s for sure.
Also – turns out this is the earliest Kyoto sakura peak in the history of record keeping – and thanks to Japan’s obsession with sakura, that goes back 1200 years. A very disturbing reminder of the state of affairs in the world.

April 3, 2021 at 2:04 amWords cannot express my jealousy that you’re in Kyoto during this rare time where Kyoto is actually not crammed to the gills (as a filthy American I am on the list of foreign countries that Japan has banned for the time being OTL). At least I can live vicariously through other’s videos and experiences
