Fruits Basket (2019) – 17

Zzzzz…

To be honest I don’t have a lot to offer on this week’s episode of Fruits Basket.  I think the decision to spend two entire episodes on that subplot is a howler to say the least, but I pretty much covered that last week.  I know there are some who found this mini-arc great and that’s fine, no issues with differences in personal taste.  In my view it kind of exemplifies all of Furuba’s tripwires – emotionally broad, manipulative, saccharine and not nearly as funny as it thinks it is.  But that’s a horses for courses thing, so whatever.

Again, highs and lows with subplots is part of the contract with Fruits Basket – the only thing that grates on me is that with all the better (and far more important to the series canon) stories that they crammed into one episode, TMS chose this of all of them to stretch to two.  Even if they’re worried about logical season cutoffs there are wiser choices that could have been made.  But what’s done is done, and we can move on now to bigger and better things – including the impending introduction of two of the best characters in the entire cast.  Can’t come too soon for me.
