Boku no Hero Academia Season 3 – 19

Here are this week’s post-Midnight, battery-challenged thoughts on Boku no Hero Academia:

  • In a very real sense, rescue is the essence of being heroes – more so than fighting villains.  It’s interesting we haven’t seen the kids put in this situation more often.
  • I loved that “bysliders” gag.
  • Poor Ochako – she’s really got it bad.  Not even doujin writers are on her side.
  • HUC!  It only makes sense that in this hero-dominated world, there’s money to be made as a victim-for-rent.
  • Nagasama Mara – a boy who clearly started shaving at a young age.
  • Deku’s inexpeince with rescue really showed here. And indeed, this segment really puts the first-years in the worst possible position – their sempai have a huge natural advantage.
  • Loved the flashback to All Might and his manner when arriving on the scene.  It’s not something one naturally thinks about, but it’s a huge part of his massive success as a hero.
  • Yaoyarozu is making her case as the class leader in “grace under fire”.
  • Of course, Bakugo seems incredibly ill-suited to this kind of work. And frankly, early returns are not favorable – even if those were whiners with minor injuries.
  • Bringing Gang Orca in as a level-up?  Damn, that’s harsh.  As Aizawa said, even real heroes would struggle in that situation.

Now then – what’s all this about a “special episode”, right in the middle of an arc?  That seems like an odd choice. Even if production issues were the reason, this wouldn’t help – it’s still new material.  I’m not going to pre-judge just because it’s original material (many will), but the timing is certainly interesting.

Apparently, the special episode next week is for a charity. From the BnHA subreddit:

“Next week is the nation-wide Japanese charity event “24h TV – Love Saves The Earth”, in which every TV station changes their program and sends stuff related to the charity event instead. Most normal programs don’t run (i.e. Detective Conan anime, which has the timeslot right after MHA), but MHA instead decided to air a special episode that ties-in with the charity event and the movie.”

  2. Ah, thanks! Well, good for them.

Bakugou’s face when he heard “Minus points” was great! For a moment, despite having read the manga, I feared that the couple with minor injuries would be upgraded to major injuries. You either save them with a smile or scare them so much, that they rescue themselves. 😛

  4. In all seriousness, that sort of behavior from a rescuer is really beyond the pale. This is the sort of thing Bakugo is going to have to deal with if he ever wants to be a true hero.

It makes one curious to see what a young Endeavor was like in rescue mode. This one, anyway.

Hm, I think Endeavor probably did okay. The anime at least implies in his extra scenes in the Stain Arc that rescuing people comes naturally to him (although that may be something he “learned” later on.) For me the interesting question is, did Endeavor have any friends? A high-school crush? Because he sure as hell isn’t sociable as a grown-up and if he was a “lone wolf” it may explain why his resentment of Allmight festered to the point, where he became that kind of abusive bastard, who only created a family to surpass his rival.
