Second Impressions – Miira no Kaikata

I’m going to be shocked as Hell if Miira no Kaikata turns out to be a stealth horror series or something, because right now it may be just about the most pure-pure anime in history.  I’m enjoying it immensely, because it’s both tremendously adorable and very funny – I’m just not 100% yet if it’s a show I can blog.  Am I going to run out of things to say eventually?  I kind of hope not because I really feel a ton of affection for it already – and because I’ve never seen anything quite like it.

On some level, it’s series like this which make me love manga and anime so much, because this is just such a weird and goofy premise that I can’t imagine anyone but the Japanese coming up with it.  It took a mangaka to think it up, an editor to look at and say “I think this can work as a serialization”, and a production committee to pay actual money to turn it into an anime.  Who know, maybe Miira no Kaikata will be a surprise hit – but either way, it’s kind of wonderful that it even exists.

Speaking of pure-pure, Sora is definitely that sort of boy, kind of a perfect dance partner for Mii-kun.  He is a bit of a “girly girl” as Motegi (Akaneya Himika) notes, but it takes a special soul to make a tiny knife for Miii-kun when he wants to help with the kitchen chores.  As if that weren’t enough, when Mii-kun wants to help turn the pages of Tazuki’s notes, Sora makes a tiny (and adorable, naturally) picture book for him to play with (how can I possibly go on after that?).  Tazuki is the “dangerous” one here – Mii is certainly terrified of him at first – but about the worst Tazuki has in him is too much curiosity about what’s under the bandage (skin?).  And that’s nothing that a dog food bribe can’t fix.

Next up, Sora-kun decides to bring Mii-kun to school after he keeps drying up at home during the day despite supposedly drinking water).  This a fraught with peril on so many levels, but hey – it sure is fun to watch.  The action begins when Sora’s friend the aforementioned Motegi takes an interest in Mii-kun (who I assume has been coached to play doll in such an eventuality, or else he’s quite sophisticated) so Sora (who’s naturally a talented seamster) decides to make her a Mii doll.  I think we all know where this is going – she takes the real one, and this leads to a terrifying odyssey through the ductwork for Mii-kun while the kids are in gym class.

I’m more or less left with the same impression I had last week – this is pretty much either going to work for you or it isn’t. I love this sort of gently quirky humor, which I think Miira no Kaikata executes brilliantly, but even I can see it’s not going to be for everybody.  And I think manga and anime do this style of comedy better than just about any other mediums – every season that has a show or two like this (though I’ve never seen a show quite like this) is better off for it.  I suppose the humor could get repetitive and some of the charm wear off, but I suspect not – I think Miira no Kaikata is just one of those horses for courses series as far as my tastes are concerned.

  1. If I were to take a guess, the reason why Mii is getting dried up is probably because he’s crying all day when Sora-kun isn’t around. What do you think?

That was my first thought as well.

Btw. I found the goofy (girly?) Sora unexpectedly scary when he mused about removing someone’s skin. Beware the nice one’s, eh?

  3. Yup, now you mention it that makes sense. Poor Mii-kun…

I think I might be one of those half-expecting this to turn into stealth horror. The moment Mii-kun held that mini makeshift knife, I was waiting for an accident (non fatal/bloody, of course) to happen. Also big props to the show for not degrading itself by having a guy-entering-girl’s-locker-room scene. I can’t describe how glad I felt when that didn’t happen.

  5. Looks cool, But was expecting something more unique.

Whoever the Mii-kun’s VA is, they’re doing an awesome job. “mi….”
I think in the manga, the experience was much more traumatizing for poor Mii-kun what with getting kidnapped and all but that addition would’ve been too much for the episode.

This show surprised and impressed me so much. Mii-kun chopping up vegetables was so adorable.
