If ever a series was cut out for a Christmas episode, it’s Shirokuma Café.
Among the early Christmas presents to the viewers of Shirokuma:
- Mamoru Miyano as Alpaca-san
- Shirokuma at Shibuya Crossing
- The full Panda family together at last, live and in photo tai-chi form
- Fukuyama Jun and Hanazawa Kana doing a duet “Don’t suck me up!”
- Holiday-themed King Penguin and Emperor Penguin chick choo-choo train
Some shows have to try and little too hard to make a Christmas ep and it shows, but Shirokuma is really in its comfort zone – very silly, just a bit heartwarming, a tiny bit satirical of the silliness of the pomp and circumstance of the season. We got a little bit of everything – Grizzly getting trolled by Shirokuma and a box of vegetable oil, Penguin-san being a pathetically needy soul (though he got his Christmas miracle, finishing one of his traditional Japanese comedic presentations), a range of returning guest stars.
We also got a healthy dose of the creepiest character in anime, Rin-Rin. I did not need to see him with a Panda hug pillow, thank you very much. On the other hand he did knit Panda-kun exactly what he wanted, a fluffy panda pochette (now they match). And poor Llama-san got outshined again, this time by the fluffier and more luxurious Alpaca-san. And Sasako-san finally appeared for real in the preview, where I’ve noticed she has a somewhat edgier personality than she does in the show itself. There was no Christmas romance for Handa-san though, sadly – just a puzzling picture for Prince Han (I think he would have preferred the scrub brush) from his greatest admirer. Perhaps he can repay her with cuteness – she’d surely consider that legal tender.

December 14, 2012 at 4:12 amMan Mamoru Miyano can do a voice REALLY CLOSE to Daisuke Ono. I wasn't sure if Alpaca was just him doing a slightly different voice or a new seiyuu altogether.
But yeah you summed up my favorite parts of the episode into those 5 bullet points X D

December 14, 2012 at 4:21 amHow can you call Penguin pathetic? Poor Penguin!
Actually I think it is poor Llama lol.

December 14, 2012 at 3:39 pmThat vacuum sure is something. It pulled Panda from a distance and considering Panda's weight, that says a lot. I loved that double "don't suck me up" of FukuJun and KanaHana.
And quite an early Christmas episode but a good one nonetheless.
Mamoru Miyano joining in here is quite a treat. I believe he's also one of those Yama Arashi porcupines too. Llama and Alpaca looks weird in a choir(and standing up as well).
No plans for Sasako-san huh. She is quite simple.
Penguin got to drink with others so he's still okay. Though is rakugo that entertaining? Seems like a bore to me. I know it's a traditional thing to them but the determination of Penguin to do one is hard for me to understand given that it's one person telling a story of sorts. It's something to see in person I guess when I eventually visit Japan. Someday.

December 15, 2012 at 12:39 amI think the fact that even most Japanese find rakugo boring is the joke, really.
Yeah, Miyano-san was one of those idol porcupines too. Several actors have done double-duty on this series.

December 14, 2012 at 10:43 pmAw, I was hoping to hear Alpaca and Llama singing in their choir. Llama-san, be my Xmas date <3. No luxurious alpaca can compare to you :,).
Panda's amount and variety of Rin-induced facial contorsions was oddly entertaining and fascinating. Never saw him squirming so much in a single episode.
This episode left me with a craving for baby penguins's choo-choo (kidnapping them NAO :,) ) , Greek yoghurt (it's indeed delicious) and champagne (they're gonna deplete poor Grizzly's stash at that pace, ahah).
Also, Wolfie in Santa garb is quite a sight. And Shirokuma can shake cocktails like a boss. Oh very merry paws.
