There’s just nothing like real artisan lemur cheese.
This was a pretty lighthearted and simple edition of Shirokuma this week, with two stories that definitely placed the comedy first. We had a sort of slightly off-kilter take on “The Secret Garden”, except that everything in this secret garden is edible and ends up on Polar Bear’s menu. The gag. of course, is that the café has such an enormous garden and none of the regulars knew about it, including the one who works there, Sasako-san. Fortunately Llama-san comes along at just the right moment (he’s proving himself an almost surrealistically kind-hearted and helpful creature) to watch the café so that everyone can go on a tour.
Some of this was actually stuff that had popped up before – the Sakura from the o-hanami episode, Tree Kangaroo-san’s coffee roasting plant – but who knew they were of Shirokuma’s property? He’s also got an herb garden (managed by a prairie dog) a vegetable garden tended by kangaroos (I’m not sure I get the joke, if there is one), even a driving range and hoops court – but my favorite is the cheese workshop, where the artisan fromage is made by lemurs, for some reason – and as if that weren’t enough they have their own water buffaloes, so that the café can be supplied with fresh Mozzarella de Buffa. Only on Shirokuma Café…
As for the second chapter, it was given over almost entirely to the trio of enterprising penguins desperate to improve penguin name recognition. When we left them they were pushing the idea of a penguin trading card game – the results were predictable – and now they seem to have found a willing partner in Handa-san. They make a strong sales pitch at the zoo, the clincher being their penguin super sentai demo (great production values) featuring a supervillain voiced by Inoue Kazuhiko. It’s no Llama Day, but that’s about the most excited I’ve seen Handa-san about anything not Sasako-related.

November 10, 2012 at 9:48 amI bet one of the mysterious trails lead to the meatworks…the other one I don't know…
Btw the evil penguin is voiced by Hiroyuki Yoshino, forever stuck in the yankee role.
Great to see you are still keeping up with Shirokuma Cafe 😀

November 10, 2012 at 6:02 pmI have no idea as well about the kangaroos and if there is a joke in there but I'm pretty sure one of them is voiced by Koyasu Takehito. Can't miss that deep voice. The other two I'm not as lucky in identifying them.
Though are those animals in the backyard Shirokuma's workers as well? They seem to be reporting to him with the various supplies. How much does his cafe earn everyday when he has the time to take breaks and leave the shop alone? Baffling.
Enjoyed the second half as well. I missed those penguins.
I want a spinoff with that penguin sentai, the pandas or even with Shirokuma's.
Enjoyable episode as always.

November 10, 2012 at 11:58 pmI suspect Shirokuma-san is secretly supplying Ipad parts to Apple using underage zoo animals…

November 14, 2012 at 4:30 pmI really like this show :,). The last few days have been hard, but now I'm all perky *hopping like a kangaroo* . although craving both mozzarella di bufala (well, at least I'm in the right country to purchase it already and freshly made, woooohooo ) and a llamaccino.
'Fortunately Llama-san comes along at just the right moment (he’s proving himself an almost surrealistically kind-hearted and helpful creature) to watch the café so that everyone can go on a tour.' Because no one would notice the empty llama corner at the zoo anyway :,). To think I would pay to have his gentlemanly zettai eyeleashes gaze addressing me at a coffee table and delicately nibbling at stray bonsai branches… ah <3 – truthfully the kangaroos have smexy eyes as well – .
The herbs garden was my personal geek delight moment… for work-related reason. Hooray herbs garden of medieval lore hooray.
The sentai skit was fun. Eyecatch included. Scarved silhouettes in the sunset! Sooo iconic. Also, hurting baby penguins= total eeebil monsters.
