Under the circumstances Niko could have come up with a more sensitive gift than that – but it’s the thought that counts, I guess.
Episode 12 of Accel World was quite entertaining, but there really isn’t a whole lot to say about it that it didn’t say for itself. It was mostly the conclusion of the battle with Chrome Disaster, which as always with this series was beautifully animated and nicely choreographed by the fine folks at Sunrise. The action quotient of these last two eps has definitely been a huge ramp-up for the series, and thoroughly enjoyable, but I hope it doesn’t become the new normal – I think it would get a bit monotonous after a while. It’s the subtler aspects of Brain Burst that interest me, but the encouraging thing is that they weren’t ignored this week either.
Yellow Radio seems to have survived being impaled by Chrome Disaster, which I guess must be a function of his high level. He took the Brave Sir Robin route and bravely ran away, taking the remnants of his hit squad and leaving Niko, Haru and Kuroyukihime to deal with the berserker. Interestingly, for the second time in this battle Snow Black got herself incapacitated. Naturally Niko and Haru didn’t get killed or anything, but we did get a little eminence front from Niko where she tried to pretend the whole alliance meant nothing to her, and Haru stepping up to do the big damage against Cherry Rook before letting Niko land the final blow against her mentor. We also got a look at the transition of the unlimited burst zone, from a futuristic Ikebukuro cityscape to a Xanadu-like natural paradise. And Silver Crow seems to have picked up a hitchhiker, and a hungry one at that – perhaps some fragment of the cursed armor that survived? I can’t imagine it’s a good thing.
The most interesting part of the ep for me was the discussion of Niko and the role her Cherry Rook played in her RL. A fellow orphan at a home for troubled children, the one who introduced her to Brain Burst, the friend whom she bypassed and insensitively left behind without thinking of what that did to his psyche. The implications of this game on RL are a component of this story I’d like to explore deeper – the extent to which Linkers use it as a pure escape from their lives, and the way the RL relationship changes for Linkers who know each other outside the Accelerated World. As for Niko she definitely showed her dere side there at the end, maneuvering herself back into Haru’s apartment, thanking him and giving him cookies (I’d have gone with celery sticks). She’s definitely a bundle of clichés, this girl, but I still find her immensely entertaining. If you ask me a few weeks I might feel differently of course…

June 30, 2012 at 8:06 amYou can't judge an anime by its seiyuu. I restarted AW after intitially dropping it for being quite angsty. Haruhyuki growing a pair, Scarlet Rain's inclusion, less of the childhood friend and Taku being quite a funny character have led me back to enjoying the show.
While I still have occasional problems with the characters motives and actions at times, its not enough to stop me a second time. Niko's were a little silly this week as were Kuroyukihime last time around.
I thought Taku had died and lost his powers but its good to know that hasn't happened. Not sure if AW will be a single run or 2 one cour seasons since SAO will start from next week.

June 30, 2012 at 8:30 amStraight two cour.
I'm still not crazy about every Kaji moment here, but he's more tolerable as Haru than in any other of his recent roles. The tone of the series seems to be a good fit for him.

June 30, 2012 at 8:28 am^We had the preview for next episode and the new OP and ED are already set(the full OP is out now) so it's definitely 2-cour and will run side by side with SAO.
And I was expecting the fight to be a bit more grittier and longer but oh well. The arc wrapped up splendidly. Now for the new arc with Chiyu. It's fairly obvious now that she'll become a Burst Linker herself and she's the green one in the OP. Gonna prepare myself now for all the rage in this new arc. And I mean RAAAGEE. Seeing that character in the preview is already making my blood boil.

June 30, 2012 at 9:51 amThis ep was good indeed, but the next arc is indeed rage worthy. From the utterly most annoying and infuriating antagonist to Haru's total patheticness. x.x Oh well it does get better late though.

June 30, 2012 at 5:08 pmI've heard all about the rage, but I just want to wait and make up my own mind. I'm probably not so committed to AW that it could make me rage anyway, TBH.

July 1, 2012 at 5:55 amWell, it was a fine finale to the first cour. I look forward to the second, if Chiyu really does become a Linker that will be a huge benefit from my perspective. I've been disappointed at how she's basically been left in the dust by all the other characters at this point and want her to play a more active role.
Enzo, I think celery sticks would have been equally insulting. Giving fat people vegetables as gifts is like giving an ugly person a mask to wear, maybe they need it but that's not really what a "thank you" present is supposed to say ;). I think in that case she should have just avoided food altogether.

July 1, 2012 at 4:25 pmMy point was that Haru has zero self-esteem (which in a way, is sort of the central conceit of the show) and much of this comes from his body issues. Thus, cookies are sort of an insensitive gift. But also I was kidding around.
