Quick Thoughts: Gatchaman Crowds 08

Hey – I have pics this time!

If nothing else, Gatchaman Crowds has managed to get a new format out of me.

  • Not as strong as last week.  More Hajime, less Berg-Katze and Jou.  Coincidence?
  • It’s ironic, but it seems as though either the budget or production schedule has evened out, because the last two episodes have actually looked professional.
  • Although the vamping gets old fast and borders on offensive at times, O.D. is still becoming an interesting character.  He’s officially admitted he’s “half-human” – though it seems the others knew that – and I like it when he gets morose and the posturing drops off him like a snake shedding its skin.  Plus a preschooler said he was the strongest Gatchaman, and we know they’re never wrong.
  • Whatever else you say about it, at least Gatchaman Crowds doesn’t have Buddy the Gorilla or blackface.  That counts for something.
  • Berg-Katze – and Mamoru Miyano – remain the best thing about the show.  Even when he’s in quiet mode, Miyano plays B-K like a bomb that’s about to explode.  I like O.D.’s description of him (quickly retracted) as a “spoiled child”.  Almost as if he’d known B-K since both of them were children.
  • Still feel nothing for Hajime.  I refuse to get into the quicksand of debating her character, because I get enough “You hate Haijme you’re a poopyhead!!!” comments as it is, but for me she still plays as a pure plot device, the most important manifestation of the lazy writing in this show that undermines much of its enormous potential.

O.D.'s camp demeanour seems more and more a front which he drops when he gets serious. Wonder if we'll ever see him get really serious?

Another thing is that since the tunnel incident Utsutsu seems to have developed a personality, which is a major improvement!

Hey, you don't have to like Hajime. That's cool. I'm cool with it. We can be civil people living within a civil society. A man doesn't have to agree with everyone. I got that. That's cool.

Now, let's talk about the episode. What a bombshell! Open society people. Know your heroes everyone. You may not like the character but the concept is beautiful! Open heroes are not new but what's fresh is having people living in the shadows come up and join the people of the light – that's interesting.

    TQ

    Too little too late.

Should have stuck to the bird suits.

I love OD's idea of moral support. "Don't worry, Pai Pai! Everyone knows you suck as a leader!".

At this point the show has pretty much adopted Hajime as the leader figure of the team– hell, even the media points it out. It's like she just barges into a room and everyone goes quiet in expectation to hear whatever she has to say. I don't think even JJ has that kind of authority.
