I’m with the Pandas on the whole kotatsu thing.  I’d kill for one right now.

[HorribleSubs]_Polar_Bear_Cafe_-_36_[720p].mkv_snapshot_02.18_[2012.12.06_21.20.34]I paid a visit to the Shirokuma Café shop at Shibuya Parco this week, just across from the NoitaminA store. It’s a pop-up that sticks around for about a month (the last one was Kuroko no Basuke) and while Blu-ray sales aren’t likely very good (given that it’s an Animate exclusive, it’s hard to tell) I take this as another sign that Shirokuma is succeeding at finding an audience in Japan. That would most likely mean manga sales are the prime consideration, which makes sense given the genre – and I’m definitely seeing a good share of swag at places like Cospa and such.

[HorribleSubs]_Polar_Bear_Cafe_-_36_[720p].mkv_snapshot_03.05_[2012.12.06_21.21.21]As for this week’s episode, it was just good clean Shirokuma fun, featuring Shirokma-san at his hard trolling best. There are really times when I wonder why Grizzly-kun even remains friends with him, but then Shirokuma goes and does something sweet which redeems his character. It’s an odd friendship, this one, but it has a certain ring of truth to it – close male friendships often seem to have one participant who lives to get the other’s goat, and one who acts angry about it but secretly likes it.

[HorribleSubs]_Polar_Bear_Cafe_-_36_[720p].mkv_snapshot_04.03_[2012.12.06_21.22.19]A whole episode about Grizzly-san’s hibernation? It’s more entertaining than it sounds – though I guess the bar gets shut down for the winter (where will the carnivores go to bond now?). I think my favorite part came in the second half, when Penguin-san and Panda-kun showed up for their “date” with Grizzly and they and Shirokuma-san proceeded to engage in a hilariously inane conversation about where to go and what to eat. Polar Bear even trotted out the old “drying kelp on the floor” excuse for why they couldn’t come over – I mean really, who hasn’t heard that one a thousand times?

[HorribleSubs]_Polar_Bear_Cafe_-_36_[720p].mkv_snapshot_06.10_[2012.12.06_21.24.26]As to why Shirokuma was so determined to troll his friend while he was trying to hibernate, I don’t really know – it was a little further than he usually goes when he’s irritating just for kicks. Maybe he just wanted to get Grizzly-kun out of the house so he could surprise him with the memory foam pillow, or maybe he really thought Grizzly was better off staying active for a while. In any event Grizzly’s tactic of stuffing the others full of nabe and getting them (except for Panda) hammered was quite effective, and soon he was happily back in his bed, snoring away the winter.

[HorribleSubs]_Polar_Bear_Cafe_-_36_[720p].mkv_snapshot_07.59_[2012.12.06_21.26.15]It seems that the “Where’s Sasako” (The calls are coming from INSIDE THE ELEVATOR!) routine is going to be a running gag in the previews, at least for a while. We also get a new ED, one of the strangest yet – featuring a group of adorable Japanese children frolicking in Shirokuma cosplay. Turns out the boy I thought was Grizzly is Sloth, which makes sense given the slowness of the song. Is Shirokuma-san being saved for last, or is Sakurai-san just not going to be pushed into doing an ED song?

Should have been easy to figure who the 4th one in the ED is from the 2nd pic. It's Sloth. The slow song was also a clue.
And ANN just updated the ending theme credits.
"Largo (ラルゴ; Rarugo)" by Kisho Taniyama(Sloth's seiyuu).

I think Shirokuma is very trollish here because he probably wants to see(and make fun of) him a little bit more. Hibernation covers all of winter right so it's 3-4 months. Pretty lonesome without him
Though bears hibernate because they preserve their energy in winter where it gets really cold in where they live right? But Grizzly is living in the city where he has access to heat now so I don't see the point of hibernating. I'm probably overthinking this 😛

Sasako-san was cute when she imitated Penguin's flapping. And there's no kotatsu where I live but I want to experience using one someday.
    Enjoyable episode as always.

  2. Yes, you're overthinking! When I lived in San Diego my cats still grew a winter coat, even though they didn't need it. Evolution won't be dissuaded that easily, unless there's too much cantus around.

Lol, Sloth's song is very befitting him. Also, baby cosplay aw <3.
I'm with belatkuro on Shirokuma's motives, our dear fuzzy one was trying to live his friendship moments with Grizzly to the max ( by bestowing and enjoying three months' worth of trolling in a very short time. And he managed to involve Panda and Penguin too, ahah).
Loved this episode as he presents two Very Japanese Things (TM) I'd really like to experience: nabe and a blessedly warm kotatsu. And of course a very 'd'awwwwww friendship' ending.
Also… nice bits with Sasako's imitation of Penguin's patapata, her paper doll in the elevator, and the oh-so-beastly red gashes pattern on Grizzly's pajama. The poor guy for all his gruffy&wild crust is a sweetie at the core really.

I am going to put my bets on Sakurai getting the last song. How can Polar Bear not sing the final ending song (and Sakurai has sung on two of the Seiyuu Disney CDs).

So how was the Shirokuma Cafe Parco thing? Were they selling anything of interest there? I will definitely be going, I already told my friend it is a definite stop.

  5. Sorry, I should have messaged you directly. It's pretty good – not at all cheap, but it's fun – they have a special recorded message from Panda-kun and Shirokuma-san. Lots of t-shaatsu, mugs, aprons, towels, stuff like that.
