Harem end!

[HorribleSubs]_Polar_Bear_Cafe_-_31_[720p].mkv_snapshot_01.56_[2012.11.02_10.28.31]Sometimes a comedy tries to shed light on reality through absurdity, and that’s often true with Shirokuma Café – by highlighting ridiculous situations they remind us how ridiculous our real-life counterparts are, and that was certainly the case with the second chapter this week.  But first we had a pretty straightforward skit featuring Penguin-san and the Seven Miss Penkos – one that certainly didn’t break any new ground but gave Kamiya Hiroshi a chance to show off some of his best non-linguistic verbalization skills.  Listening to his high-pitched… well, I don’t know what I’d call them –as Penguin-san was staring down seven angry female emperor penguins reminds me of how much fun this cast is probably having.  There was probably never any chance for this to work out well for Penguin-san so I think it’s just as well for him that it’s over – thanks to Panda-kun’s help – but it did give us the chance to hear Shirokuma-san’s “According to my Grandma’s will I can’t come out from behind this counter” line, and to discover that penguin-differentiation is yet another of Llama-san’s hidden talents.

[HorribleSubs]_Polar_Bear_Cafe_-_31_[720p].mkv_snapshot_02.21_[2012.11.02_10.28.56]As for the second skit, it did indeed serve to reminds us just how utterly ridiculous Japan’s fascination with idol culture is (not that the West is free of this particular affliction either, though the Japanese seem especially blighted).   The prospect of Panda-mama and Mrs. King Penguin being besotted with a group of porcupine idols called “Yama Arashi” (mountain storm) is every bit as silly as it sounds, especially when their backup dancers turn out to be the “Capybara Kids”.  Panda-mama and King Penguin-san go the Tokio Dome to see a live concert, where Panda-mama spends the family fortune on Y-A bling and they encounter huge lines at the ladies room.  And I’m sure that the porcupine that thanked the girls at the end was played by Mamoru Miyano, no less.  Very, very goofy stuff – but then, I think that was exactly the point.

At long last Llama-san gets his much-anticipated turn in the spotlight, delivering a mamba for the new ED.  Quite fitting given his lineage.  Still no Shirokuma ED, I’ll add – perhaps they’re saving it for last?

I hope the seiyuus really are having fun with doing this as I am in watching this because both parts were very fun. Llama being able to differentiate the Penkos is beyond me. Wonder what would happen if they dated him since he can tell them apart. That would be something to see, especially when Llama was feeling neglected last episode. Poor Penguin, can't pull of the harem end.

Second half was pretty silly and amusing. Porcupines as idols. Now I've seen everything.
And I checked the credits, it really is Mamoru Miyano. I recognized his voice as well and checked. He's credited as "Tategami Yama Arashi", if my kana on it is accurate(I'm still learning my kanas so I might be wrong). I cheated though on the kanji and just compared it in his MAL entry.

ED song is pretty catchy and possibly one of my favorites from all the EDs.

Such dashing porcupines! I couldn't shake the impression both ladies were some sort of cougar fangirls, but that was quite fun to watch (and I like the penlights actually… a cross betwenn a star and a porcupine really). Also because the group name and five-idol-band concept reminded me of these guys https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arashi , I remmber some of my forum's members going ga-ga over them XD. The bit about the ladies' room is so true as well, ahah.

My favourite part this week was in the first half. Frankly speaking the Penkos crack me up (and scare me a bit), add to this Panda's clever question and Llama's talent (Llama-saaaaan you're so deep, seeing what no one else can't see about a lady <3) plus Shirokuma's light trolling touch and we have a winner.
Penguin-san tried valiantly. But ultimately all penguin parties involved seemed to be more in love with the idea of dating than of caring about their partner for who they are. And that's quite a bit of a lesson isn't it? ^^
Anyway, Penguin-san… you have good qualities! You're the perfect straight man! You can paint some mighty masterpiece – unawarely – spoofy replicas too :,). And you blush so cutely.
Last but not least, Llama Mambo. LLAMA. MAMBO. I was waving my figurative penlight like a madwoman.
