JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure – 02-03

Well now – I don’t what I could possibly add to that.

[Commie] JoJo's Bizarre Adventure - 02v2 [CCBD0EAE].mkv_snapshot_03.31_[2012.10.22_22.50.13]I would love to have been a fly on the wall when these eps were recorded, because I can only imagine that those sessions must’ve been at least as entertaining as the series itself.  The phrase “Give me more!” must surely have escaped the director’s lips a few times, especially when it comes to Koyasu Takehito’s unbelievably larger-than-life nuclear annihilation of a performance as Dio.  You wouldn’t get more ham and cheese at a croque monsieur convention.

[Commie] JoJo's Bizarre Adventure - 02v2 [CCBD0EAE].mkv_snapshot_06.47_[2012.10.22_22.50.22]I’ve been sort of reluctant to write about JoJo, because there doesn’t seem to be a whole lot of point in trying to sum up a series like this with words.  I guess the best thing I can say is this – if the show backed off even one-tenth of one percent it wouldn’t work, because it’s the most preposterous, ridiculous and absurd thing on the air.  But it does work for precisely the reason that the commitment level – from the cast, from the writing, from the animation – is 100%.  It’s just plain batshit crazy and I can’t really compare it to anything else I’ve seen.  I wouldn’t say JJBA is necessarily my cup of tea, but it’s a lot of fun for its uniqueness and sheer bravura if nothing else.

[Commie] JoJo's Bizarre Adventure - 02v2 [CCBD0EAE].mkv_snapshot_12.36_[2012.10.22_22.50.34]It appears that the first episode – live dogs in furnaces and all – was merely a preamble to what was to come.  Grisly traffic accidents and betrayal and psychopathy give way to Ogre Street, Robert E.O. Speedwagon (Ueda Youji, giving Koyasu-san a run for his money) and vampirism.  But these aren’t your prissy twink vampires of “Twilight” ilk, or even classically suave and terrifying ones in the classic Bram Stoker mold – these are GAR killing machines who wake up hungry and in a bad mood and just get worse from there.  Given what Dio Brando was like when he was human, you can only imagine what he’s like as a vampire.

[Commie] JoJo's Bizarre Adventure - 02v2 [CCBD0EAE].mkv_snapshot_17.47_[2012.10.22_22.50.52]Taking a classic movie plotline liken the stepson poisoning the rich stepfather and merging it with this insanity is a pretty heady cocktail.  There were several moments from the climactic mansion scene in episode 3 that stand out, starting with Speedwagon’s “You’re probably asking, “Who’s this guy?” appearance.  I have no idea what “Urreeyy” means but coming from vampire Dio, it somehow fits.  So does “Goodbye, JoJo!” in Engrish – but I think JoJo’s save by sticking his knife into the stone wall, vaulting on top of it and then snagging Dio with his belt and shouting “I’m back, Dio!” probably tops the list.  I mean, why not – what else is he going to say?

I’ll certainly be keeping an eye on this one, though I won’t guarantee I’ll be blogging it – realistically, I’m not sure there’s really anything any blogger could contribute when it comes to a show like JoJo.  Considering all that we’ve covered in three episodes and that the manga is something like 70 volumes, I don’t think they make a thesaurus big enough.

JoJo's canon are actually split up into individual arcs. We're in Arc 1. Arc 2 should start in ep 6 or 7, apparently. So, there'll be a big time shift then. It's the same world and some of the same characters show up, but the MC changes. They're on the 8th arc at the moment and it's around 110 volumes. (I think 80 ran in Shounen Jump)

We're supposed to be getting arcs 1 & 2, as arc 3 was done in an OVA and that's where a lot of the iconic aspects of the series is known from. Along with the Fighting Game that went with that era of the series. The "Wryyyyyy" and "Za Waruludo" are internet memes as well.

While I haven't read the manga, someone else made a good point: in ep 3 Dio is already an overpowered, near-immortal vampire. We're 3 episodes in of at least 25 episode series and the volume is already up to 11. This is going to get even more crazy as we go along.

Which probably means blogging it isn't of much use. This is one of those series that 3 screen caps + jokes is probably all that's needed. You're either in on the series or you're not. 🙂

Well, we're getting Zeppelli next episode, but I don't think it's going be done in just seven episodes. I'd give it at least eight to ten. Phantom Blood may be the shortest "generation", but the conflict here pretty much cements what troubles all the arcs that follow, ESPECIALLY Battle Tendency.

They covered 16 out of 44 chapters in 3 eps, with eps 1 and 2 covering five and ep 3 covering six (But with Roundabout count out). Phantom Blood is 44 so at the current pace it should be about nine episodes, maybe eight though. That leaves 17 or 18 for Battle Tendency's 69 chapters which would allow for a slightly more relaxed pace.

When I watched episode 1, I couldn't help but feel relieved that they went so impossibly over the top with it. Had they tried to take the script from Part 1 of the series half as seriously as stuff like Psycho Pass or Zetsuen no Tempest, it would've been simply unbearable to watch.

I think the best kind of praise I can give anime nowadays is that "it's honest". Knowing what their audience is, and being completely shameless about it. I also don't think this will merit any blogging, because it's gonna take quite a few more episodes before HiroHiko Araki starts developing HunterXHunter levels of creativity and dedication. This premature climax should be a good place to stop reviewing it, though by no means to stop watching.

I can imagine this being hard to blog (unless you went for a row of exclamation points after every single word) , but it's fun to watch isn't it? The over-the-top-ness, the cheese. It's glorious. In a way for me is like watching a Rambo:First Blood parody (I happen to like Rambo a lot, flaws and dated ideology and all – the sequels are especially bad, but still so entertaining. They're my GAR guilty pleasures – ) with supernatural powers and cool music added to the mix.
Taking about music, I find Jojo's OP and ED to be both pretty addictive, the latter thanks to the song, the former thanks to the 'animated manga panels + scene transitions' concept and that oh-so-catchy SONO CHI NO SADAMEEEEEE refrain. <— Sing it and feel your blood pumping in full-out technicolor caps! Ahah.

    Jojo isn't GAR. It's fabulous.

  7. Something can be both.

  8. A

No because Jojo's existed a century before such /a/ trivial term was invented on 4chan, thus transcends its relevance!

    Internet terminology 101.

  9. You went to a different school than I did, then…

    Check your internet thesaurus.

Glad to see you're enjoying it, man. I remember marathonning the Jojo manga aeons ago, the whole thing is wonderful because it's not only an amazing adventure story but also a documentation of the evolution of an artist. Araki is a creative wizard who keeps making you wonder just how he will top the latest development, then to just top it effortlessly.

Trust me, it gets crazier from here!

So you never came back to this series, right?
    Mmmmm…….I wonder if one day…
