Mobile Suit Gundam AGE – 47

Even though I knew it was coming, that was still a hard blow.

[sage]_Mobile_Suit_Gundam_AGE_-_47_[720p][10bit][D90A9506].mkv_snapshot_01.33_[2012.09.10_15.46.35]Seric Abis had more death flags than the Zombie United Nations, so his demise in this episode was certainly no surprise – nor will Fram’s, when it inevitably arrives.  But it sucks, because characters whose heads are nowhere in the vicinity of up their own fundament are a rare commodity in this series, and Seric was probably my favorite character in any of the four arcs.  He certainly got more out of his screen time than anybody.  At least he got a good, solid GAR death – trapped inside the enemy vessel with the photo blaster about to be fired.  The downside was that we had to see Captain Einus further humiliated by breaking down in tears on her own bridge, though at least she was spared the indignity of someone else giving the order to fire.

[sage]_Mobile_Suit_Gundam_AGE_-_47_[720p][10bit][D90A9506].mkv_snapshot_03.03_[2012.09.10_15.48.05]The other emotional climax of the episode came as the inevitable clash between Kio and Deen arrived, and ended in somewhat shocking fashion.  Kio managed to keep to his pledge and disable DEEN, and they had their nice little heart-to-heart, and it almost looked for a moment as if this one subplot might be resolved happily.  But Zanald stepped in and killed Deen for story purposes, and that was what finally broke Kio.  He used FX-BURST mode, sliced and diced Zanald with ease, and… spared him.  What?  Yes, it looked as if Kio was finally broken, but even if berserker mode, he still has a no-kill policy.

[sage]_Mobile_Suit_Gundam_AGE_-_47_[720p][10bit][D90A9506].mkv_snapshot_06.21_[2012.09.10_15.50.12]I don’t quite know how I feel about this, to be honest.  If anyone in this series was a prime candidate for Kio’s first post-rebirth kill, it would’ve been Zanald – he’d just killed Deen for no reason whatsoever and he’s been a consistent asshat for his entire time in the cast.  On the other hand, while Kio’s vow obviously has practical holes you drive a La Gramis through, it’s sort of impressive that even when he lost himself to rage, he still had enough strength of will to avoid killing – even Zanald.  Kio’s path might be completely illogical and have no visible means to succeed, but I don’t think anyone can doubt the strength of his resolve after what happened with Zanald.

[sage]_Mobile_Suit_Gundam_AGE_-_47_[720p][10bit][D90A9506].mkv_snapshot_07.09_[2012.09.10_15.51.00]That’s the hole the series seems to be in – Kio now seems committed to his path under any circumstances, and there’s no scenario we’ve been presented with where that path could win the day.  So how does the series end in a way that’s both remotely plausible and thematically consistent?  By the looks of the preview Zaeheart is going to go all-in on Ezelcant’s plan, including wiping out Zanald’s army (after Zanald openly declared mutiny, it’s not that shocking).  If we’re to go by past experience as a guide Zaeheart will find a way to lose the battle as he always does, but then what’s to stop Flit from seeing his dream of Vagan genocide come to fruition?  If I had to guess I’d say the Federation will win this battle and castrate the Vagan militarily, but somehow Kio will stop Flit from wiping out the civilian population.  Whether the series can pull that off in a believable and credible way is very much an open question.

At least Fram isn't dead yet!

Kio has become so annoying though.

Seemed to me that Kio *thought* he killed Zanald, but he just happened to escape, Jeremiah Gottwald/Orange style. Conversely, I also think that Deen might have escaped with his life. If you pay attention to his suit exploding, you see the head fly off. Not definite, but as with Gundam, even a confirmed death isn't a confrimed death, a la Mu La Flaga.

  3. I did think about Zanald escaping by accident, but I'm pretty sure Kio checked himself before he killed him intentionally.

I was looking hard for some sign Deen survived, but I don't buy it.

Aren't the pilots in the chest of the suits not the head?

  5. A

Vagan cockpits are in the head but I'm pretty sure Deen died.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOO SERIC ABIS! He was definitely one of the few whose head was in the right place in this series.

Also, regarding Kio, I still think he should've killed Zanald, or not back off at the last second. Someday, he's going to realize by letting Zanald get away, countless people would die by him.

In the end though, I thought SID was going to show up in super rowdy mode and start killing left & right until Vegan+Earth bros unite and kill him. In the episode where Zeheart and Asuno fought SID, SID lives at the end!

Hm. This reminds me. What site do you usually watch your anime from?

I personally watch it from Animecrazy, but do you have any sites which are better or have better quality?

  8. Not offhand, no. I need to go the old-fashioned route in order to get screencaps.

So now one looks at the images all the way down to the bottom, eh? I thought I'd get at least one comment…

No more cats, prefer puppies instead 😀

Will what did you expect? Last week you gave us three images and now only one? You could have made all the top three at least kittens …

(But seriously, I think that the position of it made it a bit harder to notice)

  11. (But seriously, I think that the position of it made it a bit harder to notice)

That was the whole point. 😉

You would have to be at a sage level to be able to guess where Enzo watches his anime.

    I'm sorry….

  13. A

I'm afraid he guards his sources well it seems. Enzo has pretty little birds everywhere who sings tunes inside his ear…

'' it’s sort of impressive that even when he lost himself to rage, he still had enough strength of will to avoid killing – even Zanald.''

Maybe I'm giving this show more credit that it deserves, but I took it as a a parallel to episode 14 where after Desil killed Yurin and Flit went berserk, and despite sparing his life, Flit become a fallen messiah at that point and his believe of being the Savior got shot down. Here in comparison despite falling to his rage and his failure to save Deen (why the capital letters lol? He's not a studio …) he still managed to pull himself back and keep his way, thus succeeding where FLit had not …

But myabe I'm thinking about this more than the writers of this show had done …

'' So how does the series end in a way that’s both remotely plausible and thematically consistent? ''

Having seen the ending for the game, I can give a none spoiler answer for that … the ending of Age will be as remote from plausibility as Mars is distant from Earth, and it's be as thematically consistent as had Zeheart's resolve to save the Vegan population (i.e. not very)

As for Flit … I won't say anything now, but you had written something in one of your AGE-2 post that will end up being proven true Enzo …
